Can I drop a 400 engine in a 47 farmall M. Will clutch & flywheel work. If anyone could give me any info on it I would appreicate it. thanks Dean

I cant understand why anyone would put a 400 engine in a m. why give up the TA,and live pto. I just don't understand,my cousin claims his super m has a 450 motor,his 560 has a 706 motor.i think somepeople just like to blow smoke.he also has a 1650 oliver, but it has a 1850 motor.im calling bull$hit.
if you got a good straight M that's has sentimental value,or building a antique puller/ I say go for it.but id take a 400 over a M any day.

Don't worry about the negative replies. . .some folks just cant answer a simple question. Yes, a friend of mine did an engine swap of that nature. Everything went smoothly. Good luck.

Need to use the M flywheel and clutch if the 47 liftall pump is in the center housing. If using the 400 flywheel a SM clutch and pressure plate is needed. Then you would need a liftall out of a late m or SM to clear the 12 inch pressure plate.
Need to install a M type throttle lever in the 400 governor or install the complete M governor.
ventilation line needs run from the top of the 400 valve cover to the air cleaner inlet where the M was. If using the 400 carburetor the choke rod needs bent to work on the engine side of the carburetor.
If not using the 400 hydraulic pump a ignition drive housing from some 50 model M up or a SM. 47 housing has a different bolt pattern than a 400 front plate and cover is the reason for the change. That should be about it unless I forgot something.
