Heads up on newer Super Duty

It is in the manual, but still scares the CR@P out of me when the message comes on that says "check engine coolant additive" every 15K. This is for the anti cavitation additive.

our 7.3 powerstoke in our wrecker has been down since the beginning of january. 3 diesel shops have worked on it. threw thousands of dollars of parts at it to no avail. its been at a ford dealer for over a week now. they decided it was the injector control module, so they changed that. nope. now they have all the injectors out. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. i am really beginning to hate computerized diesels.

I still cannot believe that the technicians cannot troubleshoot these things. They throw parts at them $1000s at a time.

Then try fixing it yourself. Computer tells you that this component it bad you replace it, guess what, you replace it and computer says the same thing again or computer says everything is good but still runs bad. chris

Dealership technicians are paid flatrate. What ever the book says it should take, that is what they are paid. They get paid little to nothing to diagnose a vehicle, half hour to an hour if lucky. Unfortunately, that is the way dealers work. Flatrate pay favors speed over quality. Most dealer techs are paid in the $20 an hour range. Think about it, how much work would you do for 10-20 dollars, minus taxes. This is why I quit the dealer and opened on my own.

On the 7.3, you may as well just pick it up. The tech is in the free work territory now, so it only goes down hill from here. I have seen it play out too many times.

it had an intermittent loss of power problem. truck would only run about 40 mph. if you shut the truck off and restarted, it would be better for a while, then act up again. never threw a code. so far, the fuel sender and in tank filters are new, new fuel filter, 2 cam sensors, 2 pcm units, various wiring harnesses, the icm, now the injectors are all out of the truck.

I truly wish that the American people would stick together and boycott buying this darn junk. If the American people would stop buying these computerized crap mobiles for just 1 year, I do believe you would see a change in things.
The company I worked for had several (6) of them 2010 and 2011 model super duty vehicles that were giving so much trouble that they took the vehicles back to the dealer and stopped making payments. Last I herd anything about them they were still parked at the dealer and they were in court.

ave you ever gone trough a electronic trouble shoot procedure as laid out in a automotive repair service manual to pin point a particular problem?
The electronics in today's vehicles are so complicated it boggles the mind.
No wonder the average Joe mechanic gets completely lost and start throwing parts at it in the hope to hit it right.
After all it ain't his money he's spending .

Learn to DIY is the only way to go to keep financial damage within limits.

I keep the financial damage in check by telling the mechanic that if they just start throwing parts at it, I'll pay for the last part. The rest are on them. I don't pay for 'guesses'. I usually write that on the shop order.

And I always ask for all replaced parts back.

They tend to spend a little more time diagnosing - when they don't tell me to get out :)

Most of us have been through the routine of replacing the part the computer claims is bad, watching the vehicle run fine for a week or less, and then go back to the same old tricks because the new part wasn't the real fix. It's not only confined to cars and pickups. There's a reason why truckers buy a glider kit and put a pre-emissions engine in it, a practice that is soon to be abolished. Jim

They make vehicles now above what most mechanics can troubleshoot or want to because they make more changing a part on some other vehicle. Or they work at a place that won't pay them for time spent troubleshooting or get rid of them if they don't throw parts on.
Most technicians that have the knowledge to do the troubleshooting and repair won't work for what most mechanics get for pay and for time allowed pay.

Too many computer systems in vehicles today! Looked at an '13 Terrain last night. Took the salesman 20 minutes to explain how to operate the radio, screen after screen and menu after menu, then when he was done he showed us that it had voice command as well!
Call me old fashioned but I liked cars when you could understand them by looking at it and tracing the wires or hoses.
I do like the comfort features Ok and I can learn to operate most computer controller devices, I just find it way overkill that I need a touch screen and three alternate way (second push button, control on the steering column and voice command) just to tune in a radio station!
Uff Daa!!

Diagnosis isnt as easy as you may be thinking, that is a complicated combo of electronics and mechanical systems there...none of which are easy to access to put your eyes or hands on. You sometimes end up taking the symptoms and clues, use your experience and intuition, cross your fingers and take your best guess, BTDT. Techs are expected to be 100% mistake free , thats hard to live up to....

You have to take the cab off the frame to do any engine work.Imagine what that wiring harness will be like in a couple years.

eah, what happened with on/off , AM/FM, dial in sound and dial in station...4 little buttons.??????
Worked fine for 50 yrs and any fool knew how to.

sk my son,..he knows all about it!!.
wires hanging everywere waiting for chafing trough, clips and plastic shields are broke or split, rattle here, rattle there, bolts and screws are missing.
Mechanics don't give a ratts a$$
Truck is only 6 years old.

Just to be sure, are you referring to the ones with a diesel engine?

$1238 to replace the one on my Farmall 95 because the overhead lights quit. No junction boxes in it. The whole thing had to come out. 8 hours labor. Warrantee.

Hey in mechanics defence the scanners or laptop they plug in to your truck , tractor , semi ext... Just gives the mechanic a general area to check for problem its not an exact specific pin point ... Sometimes its a loose transistor it transformer in the printed circuit board that only acts up at a specific moment going over bumps only when its damp only when every electronic device is on and loads that circuit its not always as simple as replace light bulb over barn door and everything is fine .... Just my .02 c

(reply to post at 00:08:07 02I understand it's not always the mechs fault, my question is why make things so overly complex to control on things that don't need to be so overly complex? The radio, the heat and AC, the turn signals and lights, the brakes, window and lock controls. Makes no sense. I can see the emissions stuff, but the rest is just over engineered for the sake of over engineering IMO.
