Tire chains, what's a good price?

I have a Ford 2N with 11.2 - 28" rears.

The local John Deere dealership wanted something like $430 for a set of tire chains for it.

I'm wondering if that's what they really go for or if I should shop around.

Keeping in mind that if it's far enough I'd have to pay for shipping, and shipping makes it exceed the John Deere dealer's cost, I might as well just drive across town & get 'em from JD.

Ladder style chains on CraigsList here for less than $100 regularly.
TSC has cross link chains on clearance right now for $140/set new.
I'd look around. Used chains are fine. Cheaper in summer of course.

Where are you located? I often have, or have access to used
sets. I'm in MN. Sell them for $50-$250 depending on size
and condition.

Old ladder chains for skinny tires like those are super cheap
here. Won't fit on the newer compacts wider tires. I've got 2
sets here I can't sell at 100$

Depends on what kind of chain you're talking about... Personally... I think if you're looking at a Duo-Trac style chain with 3/8" side and cross chain, you're going to pay about that much. If you build a set of ladder chains yourself from good quality 3/8" cross and side chain and use j-hooks to attach the cross chain... you'll easily spend that much. I have no doubt you can go buy used chain somewhere for 100 bucks... but it might be the worst money you ever spent too. I find it's not uncommon to wear out a set of cross chains in one winter if you're on the road or concrete with it any amount. That is where the j-hooks pay their way.

Might try your local auto Peres store also just to compare
prices. I bought a set for a pickup from Oriellys a couple years
ago they had to order them but had them the next day. Their
price was about the same as tirechains.com if I remember
right and no shipping charges.

I balked on the price of the chains for a few years til one day I
was pushing snow one the tractor started sliding. Slow at first
but it quickly picked up speed. It finally stopped about 50 yards
down the drive perfectly straddling the front bumper of my
truck. As the shock set in I got to calculating the cost of all the
parts if it had went another foot. I went to tire chain.com and
ordered a nice set of duo tracs and by all accounts figure I got
off cheap! Didn't calculate the price of my shorts...

Your mileage may vary.
