It's about time.

I heard on the news tonight that NY wants to make NYC it's own district, or make it run under its own government. In a trial vote it was 80/20 for it. We've been saying that for years. If it happens I wonder if it will benefit us upstate!

Good question.

At least then maybe my vote would count for a change. What, or whoever I vote for is always the loser as the welfare centers have such large populations and always get their big government friends/programs.

Upstate has been trying to get shed of that stinkhole for 30 years. Can't happen soon enough. I'll believe it when it actually happens though, not until. The only question is, will it happen soon enouigh to salvage what little is left of the upstate enconomy.

do you think here in IL that we could get rid of Chicago in the same manor? I think it"d make for a nice change for us downstaters.

That's my goal, to never ever go there, I would not go for the 8th grade field trip years ago in school, as I've said before the only way I'd go to that dump would be to go to Aqueduct or Belmont park.

If they do that, I'd serious consider packing my bags and moving to NY state.

I love upstate NY - just don't want anything to do with your state government/taxes.

Mass is bad enough

Lol, my wife just bought a car in Pittsfield mass, they said the same thing, guy even called it taxacusstte, spelling ?? Lol

Larry, you need to remove your rose covered glasses when you visit NYC.
If someone could invent a huge masonary saw and make a relief cut just south of Hudson, NY and then take a big male and break off NYC and let it float off into the Atlantic, all of us upstate would be better off. The political coruption and social services coruption down there is unbelivable, Several state senators and reps, from NYC., are now being prosicuted by the feds., for corrucption. Upstate NY is losenig manufacturing businesses right and left, because of high taxes to support NYC. The late'st Remington Arms expanding to Alabama, and not here in it's birthplace, central NY.
Loren, the Acg.

Not for me, my cousin lives down there, always texting me pics of the place. I won't even go visit him. I could care less about china town. Lol

I know its a dump, just wanted to see what Jay would say,.The last time we were there in Chinatown,it smelled baaad,,,garbage everywhere and crowds of people,,,little italy wasnt too bad but,we dont need to go there again thats for sure,I was just joking with Jay,he knows my sense of humor....

She could care less about it too. I just asked her. We'd rather go to ACGs place this spring! Lol, which I hope to do.

I was just joking with you,When you stop at a stop light a bum wants money to clean your windshield with a dirty rag, sprays foam on your window then asks for money to wipe it off,,,nice place

Last time I went through with myself and 2 of my other trucks my windshield was shot while driving. Another driver was close to being robbed but his 357 changed the perps mind.I would not go back for any reason.

you only got the first three letters right, but those are the only three that matter. :)

Actually my biggest complaint here is the urban sprawl. I'm now surrounded by soccer mom's and dads who want any remaining open farm land "fixed up" into nice little dog parks and soccer fields and cul-de-sacs with pretty houses, as long as the roads have quaint farmy names, that's what matters most to them.

I'm the type that can get along with pretty much anybody, but still, I've just got nothing in common with most people around here.

I've got a ring of close friends I'd miss, but - I need more land, and the soccer families drive the prices way too high.

I agree, that's been happening here too, they put up a huge shopping mall and call it Latham Farms, ect, it makes me sick,

Jay,

I think Minnesota would benefit from a similar amputation.

Seems the "twin cities" rule the roost, vote-wise, but there's plenty that disagree with that massive voting area.

D.

I know Larry. I have nothing against anyone who likes the place, I know there are some good things there, ahhh, Aqueduct and Belmont! Lol,, no really the arts and museums ect. But it costs the rest of the state to much, let them get off the upstate teat, and survive on there own.

Nobody drives cars in large cities except in LA. Leave your car at your lodging and take the public transportation anywhere in the city for less than $5 per person. When I'm in Chicago I park and stay near Midway airport and ride the train into the city.

Don't 3 million of MN's 5 million people reside in the Twin Cities? If the MPLS-StPaul were split off we'd still complain just as much about Rochester, Duluth, St Cloud and Mankato.

Even in my county of 35,000 people, there is a big split between the bigger towns of over 2,000 people and the smaller mostly rural townships. Former Governor Tim Pawlenty proposed combining MN's 87 counties into 8 districts to illiminate duplication and inefficiency at the county level. His proposal wasn't well received.

The Greeks and the Babylonians probably had similar city-rural tensions.

In wisconsin placement of large mega farms is up to madison local goverment has no say . so you could have a million hogs anywhere you want but not next to a big city and its happened imagine if you spent your whole life farming and next day something like that moved in next door and you cant even voice a concern and its sad because a few for profit only make it hard for others

No Jay, NY does not want to chop off NYC. The report that is circulating is that several groups are circulating petitions asking to get the process started. This has been going on for a few years now. The 80/20 report is a poll taken by one of those groups. There is no statewide ballot initiative or anything like that in play.

Now, for myself, I think the group the news reported on doing this has the wrong idea. They want to chop off NYC, LI and an area 35 miles or so north on NYC. Wrong. You chop it off about 5 miles north of Albany. You get rid of Albany, the NYS Constitution, the Adirondack Park, all the state Authorities, ORDA, start selling off the millions of acres of state land to settle our debt, move the Capitol to maybe some little town like Lowville, Elizabethtown or Stone Arabia and put up a good big pole barn for the State Gov't to meet in once a year. Our new Constitution would recognize private property rights, the 2nd Amend and limit gov't. The Gov's mansion can be a double wide and the food service will be either catered by Stewarts, Nice and Easy, McDonalds or you can brown bag it. The taxpayers on NY will pay for our Gov't reps phone bills and stamps, the rest is up to them. They will meet for 5 days each year. The Governor will make $100K a year, be expected to provide his own vehicle and to maintain his office and taxpayer funded home. That's still a sweet gig. No unfunded Federal mandates would be enforced, employed or recognized. A 5% income flat tax would be established to pay for state services- no deductions, no exemptions. If the state can't run on that, too bad.

I think that would be a good start.

sure would be great if it ever happened...doubt it though.
It would be nice if our upstate votes ever counted on anything.
NYC can and does outvote us on most everything.
never been there, never will....looks like another planet when I see it on the news.

Besides, looking at a map, shouldn't NYC have been part of New Jersey??

(quoted from post at 18:42:40 02/18/14) then how would i get off Long Island to get upstate?? Bridgeport ferry?

...... or Orient Point! Gonna cost you though. When I lived on the east end of the north fork and was makeing the trip to NNY the worst part of the trip was from the west end of Suffolk/east end of Nassau to the Throgs Neck bridge up to the Tappen Zee.After that all was good.

your right about that,,I cant even joke about it,,,,your lifestyle is what a lot of us dream about or read about ,,,now go cook some of that homemade bacon and homegrown eggs and think about it,,,,you are a rich man,,,,

(quoted from post at 05:51:42 02/19/14) brett you should run for office. I love reading your posts in the morning.

I did run for office, just got elected this past fall. Thanks for the compliment.

(quoted from post at 05:47:59 02/19/14) 100 a year?,,,Jay ,,,take the job,you would be good for the state if I Lived in Bretts new NY state idea I Would cast a vote for Jay

I forgot to add that for that $100K a year you actually get HELD RESPONSIBLE if you screw up!!! That's the way it works for the rest of us, should be the same for the Gov.

Make it a neutron bomb. That way you won"t have to rebuild it. Just have to clean out the bodies of the leaches.

Ya, thanks Larry, except for right now, I'm sitting here listening to Barney and Friends, with you know who! Lol hahaha

I arrived in NYC on the morning of 9/12/01. I was standing in front of the bull on Wall St by 10AM, was at Ground Zero 10 minutes later and worked there for 5 months on and off. While NYC may not be my idea of a great place to live, as a 9/11 worker I take offense at the idea of bombing NYC or any place else in the US. I met a lot of real nice people down there, even if they were citiots. The people and I, and certainly the City and State gov't and I, may not agree on much, but jokes about bombing NYC are in such poor taste that it really stands out. Maybe you've forgotten 9/11, but I still have nightmares thanks and don't find such humor at all appropriate.

Let NYC and downstate go their own way from Northern/Central/Western NY, but lets go without bloodshed.

Sorry Jay, I always sort of lump Northern NY and the east side together in the same area. Not a lot of difference between Washington Co and St Law Co really. The whole Champlain basin is a lot like the St Lawrence Valley too. Same type of people and problems. I've always thought of NY as being divided into the Greater NYC/LI metro area, to include the area up to the Tappan Zee anyway, the Catskill/Capitol District, Northern, Central and Western NY. Yeah, you can subdivide into the Finger Lakes, Adirondacks, Thousands Islands, etc. but why bother?

That's ok Bret, I just thought you might have a grudge against
me and wanted me to be part of the NYC area, lol, 5 miles
North of Albany is fine by me, I'm 25 miles NW of Albany. Now I
see Cumo wants to provide inmates a collage education with
our money!

It's amazing how many of us here in the Land of Lincoln would like to see Cook County(Chicago)become the 51st state. Pray hard

Yup, gonna freeze property taxes, cut income tax rates, educate convicts, buy more state land, put more people on food stamps and Medicade, balance the budget, hire more people, give grants.....the list is unending. The guy is just grandstanding for a Presidential run. Lies, lies, lies. Can't spend more while taking in less and reduce debt all at the same time.

I sat on an industry committee for about 7 years and we met in NYC 2-4 times a year (most members were in the Eastern U.S.). Was always a hassle getting in and out and expensive. Our corporate travel manager gave me crap about the hotel bill the first time I went there, and I stayed in a cheap place, relatively. I did enjoy what I was able to see of the city. Took my wife and her mother along on one trip and they went all over the place over the two days, so she's seen more of the city than I ever have. Saw a B'way show one night, Cats I think it was. One of the last times I was there our group had dinner at the restaurant on top of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. Had our meetings in 7 WTC. Was infuriated when I saw it all crumble on 9/11/01 (I still believe that debt has not been paid either). Couldn't live there or even near there, but fun to visit and leave!

We have some good friends that came here to Ohio from upstate NY many years ago. They would never go back to live because of all the problems the state has. Unfortunately, the liberals here want to bring those same problems. Keep it, thanks.
