Here in nj we had about 2 inches of dry snow,School is closed,,,due to the fact one of he towns has no salt, I dont remember when I was young much salt being spread, I believe lawyers have really changed things here in nj, My 02 cents for today

Our school is on Normal hours today, about the
ONLY one not posting a 2hour delay. My Wife
drives a Bus I hope she can get out my driveway.
Near Titusville Pa...

We had school delay cause of black ice. Running short on salt. There is a large cargo ship loaded with salt in the port of Newark ,they won't let him unload since he not flying american flag. Do you have a flag you could lend him. Well, come to think of it, may take more than that.

Around here, on bad weather days, the Superintendent goes out and drives the country roads between 4am and 5am to determine if school will be delayed 2 hours or Canceled. I believe our district runs 11 or 12 buses. Two to three hundred riders. I don't want his job in making the call. Putting that many KIDS at risk is a BIG decision. A decision that could cost a childs life or legal action against the district. I glad I'm not the "idiot" that has to make that decision. jmho gobble

thats what Im saying, you cant figure it out,you had a lot of snow,we had no more than 2 inches of powder,I thought 2 hr delay, but its closed, you dont even have a delay

Our town had a scheduled day off.Every time there is a federal holiday they have Tuesday off as well.Teacher professional day or something like that.Generally they follow the regional school cancellations.

I too am glad I"m not the idiot in charge. That said the real idiots are the ones without the guts to make a decision based on sound reasoning -vs- a worry about some parent being an idiot and wanting to whine about things. Further, while lawyers are the biggest problem, for every one idiot lawyer there is another all too happy to defend against his idiocy. The problem is I don"t think any of them have the sense to defend themselves against someone who throws a bit of common sense at them and puts them in the same shoes they try to put others in. If more had the guts to do this, I think many problems would simply go away before gaining too much ground. The problem is if a lawyer uses that tactic against one of his own kind, another just might use it against him........

In the end though it"s all about people using common sense and having the guts to stand up and justify their decision to everyone based on sound reasoning -vs- some stupid fear of being sued, etc, etc, and then not being afraid to follow through without apology. Because again, I have yet to see one of the real idiots not left in a blubbering mess of confusion, and at a lack of meaningful words, when faced with the realization that common sense will nnalert their idiocy every time.

Another change, I don't remember ice being "black". Yesterday we had freezing rain, some of it froze on my windshield, was it black or clear ice? Maybe climate change is the reason it's become black?

Back in the early 1980's, I spent five years as Buildings and Grounds Supervisor for a fair sized local public school.

During a snow, the Superintendent would simply stay home, maybe even lay in bed, and listen to the radio. When he heard on the radio what the surrounding schools were doing, he'd make the call for ours. He was a dork anyway. He was an alcoholic, the town drunk if you will, and just hanging on till he could retire. And the School Board didn't have the guts to do anything about him for fear he'd sue them.

It was exasperating. For the typical 3 or 4 inch snow, it was expected that snow removal would be done by the time school started. So, my crew and I would get out at 3am and start moving snow. Then at 6am we'd find out school had been called off and we'd have all day to fool with it.

in 1963 I might have looked like the kid on
the TV movie The Christmas Story , being the
youngest of 4 with all my hand me down snow
suits. In that year we walked 1/2 mile up our
dirt road to catch the school bus in the winter
when the snow was bad. I know we did it for at
least a 3 week stretch. In 1972 more of the same
& that year the township hired huge snow blowers
to come in & open the roads. I remember seeing'
our mail box fly'en acrost the frt yard in
Pieces. The 77 & 78 it was bad. Bye then I wasn't
catch'n no school bus...

Have the schools open,do not run the buses on slick days.If dad or mom can get to work they can drop the kids off.If mom and dad are on welfare and don't work then they can get off of their lazy b---- and take them to school.

(quoted from post at 07:31:05 02/18/14) Another change, I don't remember ice being "black". Yesterday we had freezing rain, some of it froze on my windshield, was it black or clear ice? Maybe climate change is the reason it's become black?

I never heard of black ice until my second tour of Germany. It was used to describe a situation of ice that caused the roads to look wet rather than icy and because it was on black top the road was black. Can be a very dangerous condition because normally it's patchy causing drivers that are unaware to hit it at much faster speeds. Glare ice covered everything. Now it seems that any ice on the roads that from a distanced makes the roads look like they are just wet is now black ice.

So, if the temperature is and has been very cold, like zero for an extended time, anyone should know that what you see on the road isn't just WET, it's ICE. So how can there be black ice when it's super cold?

Larry@stinescorner; with two inches of powder, folks ought to be able to 'drive for conditions'. And something else, it amazes me we still get to call it black ice.

A year or two ago a young girl in my town was seriously injured in a car crash when her vehicle hit ice on an expressway while on her way to school. She has made a miraculous--and well-publicized--recovery. Heard on the local news today that her parents are now suing the school board for not canceling school that day. Ain't litigation wonderful?

The district where my kids went to school covers a huge area. That district is often the only one that doesn't cancel for snow, but if we get 2" of snow late enough that the plows haven't cleared at least the main county roads they will cancel.
It wasn't always that way. They used to never cancel for snow short of blizzard conditions. Over the years many kids were killed in accidents driving to or from school. It wasn't until a bus driver was killed in an accident on her way to work that the district started using more snow days.
The superintendent lived in the town where two of the schools are. He only had to drive a few blocks to work. He figured if he could get to school so should everyone else. He didn't care about the conditions of the country roads....until one of his bus drivers got killed.

Nearly all of the students ride buses as it's primarily a rural district. Most of those bus routes were 60-80 miles. We live 17 miles from the school but my kids rode 45 miles on the bus. The ones that got on earlier in the route rode many more miles.

I don't mind if they cancel for snow. Whether or not 2" of snow warrants cancellation depends on when the snow fell and road conditions.
