Over Christmas vacation we went to the Cabela's store in Owatonna, MN.

Thought some of you might enjoy seeing their taxidermy displays.

I also have some of the mountain critters too. Will post those later.

Cabella's has the best displays! Its a real treat to see.I can't imagine the amount of money they spend. We have a store within 50 miles, but I only get once a year-or less. Thanks for posting.

They all have the big displays- except for Kearney. They have some stuff there but not much. It's more of a converted warehouse.
Cabela's house in Sydney (NE) has just as much in it. He's in bad shape, and she still cleans it herself. They had a maid for a short time to help her, but she quit- it was too much work.
Once they are gone it will be turned into a museum.

That is a really cool store with a lot to look at in MN. I drove by it earlier this month but didn't have time to stop in but usually do. If you have a chance, stop by the Bass Pro shop in Des Moines, Iowa. That is even better in some ways. They have a cool restaurant that is like being in an ocean. Plenty of pics of it on their website but it is better in person!
A bowling alley, too

I have been in Cabella's store in Mitchell SD and the one at Kansas City. They are awesome to say the least.

Knew the Cabela brothers. The youngers Jerry was a real good friend of my brother. They started out in Chappell NE. My home county. There is an Elephant in the Sidney store that Mrs Cabela shot. Years ago we were able to land a plane in the field next to the Sidney store and walk to the store. But now you have to land at the airport, but they will come and get up. Neat people and neat stores.

Second picture down - that zebra on the right looks like he's smiling.

Maybe because his buddies, getting snagged, and not him.

Yes, Cabellas has got a lot! The nicest one I have seen is at the Sioux Falls Zoo! They are all one mans! He had it displayed in the back of his store, but now it's at the zoo! IMPRESSIVE!

wait a minute...

I KNEW he caught my eye for some reason.

I think he's the zebra on fruit strip gum:

The store in Olympia, WA has mostly local game animals- still a nice display, and when you go with kids, might as well just go to the display first thing and let them get their fill, or you'll have to keep chasing after them while you try to shop.

Do other stores have the fish underneath the mound?

I worked for Cabela's for six years Aug.1990 to Jan. 1997. I know the Cabela's ,Dick, Jim and Jerry at Chappell . My son has worked there since Aug of 1990. I live 9 mi from the Sidney store. and Live 4.5 south of where Jim Cabela lives. In 1990 they had two stores (Sidney and Kearney and two wharehouses (Dist. centers) I loaded trucks and at Christmas time we would load out 52,000 pkg.'s a day. 99% of business was mail orders

Jimmie,

Truly amazing. I know a gal who worked at this store some years ago - she said it is unbelievable what they sell in a day!

Mike (WA),

Yes, they have aquariums in Owatonna - my pics did not turn out... darn fish would not hold still! :)

Yes, kids love it. We go probably once per year and our youngest would always say, "Yea, we get to go to da store wif dead am-mi-mals."

I have some pics of a mountain display I will post another time.

They also used to have an additional African critter display - but it got relocated to another store or museum.

We went through the Owatonna store in 2012 on our vacation to Minnesota, my wife's home state. Saw those same displays and made LOTS of pictures. Amazing action poses and natural looking environment that those mounts are displayed in.

JRSutton,

I think you're right!

Probably a teen zebra... smilin' because mama's going down! NO MORE NAGGING! LOL.

Clodbuster,

I love the bowling alley! Really neat. I wonder if little kids like it, or if it scares the daylights out of them.

There was a family full of kids bowling while I had lunch. They didn't fall in!

My IA cousins always told me it was better than Cabela's but I was not so sure.... I don't think they were lying to me.

The main center alley of the store has what looks like giant chunks of grass and roots elevated above you so you see the roots hanging down. Animals are up on the grass above that.

I should have taken photos but was in a hurry due to driving slowly on ice all morning.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Richard Cabela, a co-founder of outdoor outfitter Cabela's, died Monday. He was 77.

Cabela, who went by Dick, died at his home in Sidney, where the company is based, said spokesman Joe Arterburn.

The company that sells outdoor gear and sporting goods got its start humbly in 1961 when Cabela bought $45 of fishing flies in Chicago. When the flies didn't sell quickly at the family's furniture store in Chappell, Neb., Cabela started selling them through the mail with his wife, Mary, and brother, Jim.

Dick Cabela's first successful ad in Sports Afield magazine offered five free fishing flies as long as the buyer paid 25 cents shipping and handling. That led to the development of the Cabela's catalog. Today, the company has 50 retail stores across the U.S. and Canada. Last year, it had $3.6 billion in revenue.

Current Cabela's CEO Tommy Millner said Dick and Jim Cabela made it possible for people to find quality outdoor gear no matter where they lived.

"The outdoor industry has lost an innovative thinker and a tireless supporter of wildlife and habitat conservation," Millner said. "The business world has lost a true original, who built a business model that will be studied and emulated for years; a man who, through perseverance and hard work, achieved the American Dream."

Dick continued to serve as Cabela's chairman until June 2013, when he moved into a chairman emeritus role and Jim Cabela became chairman.

Dick Cabela was honored for his business accomplishments and his commitment to conservation. He was named to the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame in 2006 and Nebraska Business Hall of Fame in 1994.

Kind of ironic that I posted the photos today... had them since the end of December.

Prayers for comfort and peace for his family.

Well, it's really cool. Maybe you will get there again - then can snap a few photos to post.

Thanks for the pictures, I was in the Owattona store back in the early 2000's while on a trip to Mt. Pleasant to get some buses. It was impressive, the aquarium was massive.

Cabella's opened 2 stores here in Saskatchewan just before this past Christmas. While not as big as the Owattona store (no aquarium), our local one has quite a large diorama of stuffed animals. Good quality clothing in stock, prices aren't too bad. I think they'll do well here.

I'm down between Stockville, Cambridge, and McCook.
WP you know me on the cowboard. I lost my password here and the one they said I should have didn't work, so I found a new username for here.

Nebraska Life magazine had an article about them.
I've been to the Dundee (MI), Sydney, Kearney, Wheeling(WV), and Lebanon(PA) stores. Dundee was biggest, but truck parking is clear around the back of the store. Lebanon is no overnight truck parking. Wheeling, Lebanon, and Sydney truck parking is on the side or near the front. I'm thinking of riding up to Sydney again here in the next couple weeks. I'd say it's my favorite.

Usually try to get in around lunch or supper time, get an elk or ostrich sandwich in the diner.
