All my life I have seen things, and wondered, just how did they put that thing together, and can I take it apart, and get it back together One thing is the drill chuck. I had a drill chuck that was opening hard. I went to the internet, and found how to take one apart. Very simple. Now my chuck works like it should. Another thing is the GM steering column tilt assembly. That one just about got the best of me. Stan

And then there's all the plastic stuff that has tabs that won't come apart without breaking. "One and done". Or keep a good supply of JB Weld on hand.

I have done many of them. I think the main thing is to take it slow. Each time I rush I screw them up.

If you're talking about the Saginaw column, the one in my truck needs taken apart and the hinge fixed. I am thinking that paying $500 to ship it to someone who rebuilds them professionally and have it done will be worth the saved time and headache.

While not a SIMPLE mechanism, repairing the typical tilt column does NOT require you to be a "rocket surgeon".

Pretty close, though!

The problem is you need to have special tools/jigs to hold stuff aligned and compressed while you reassemble it.
Have done em hated it though.
If I ever work on one again it will have to be mine or a very good friends :)

I am far from being a wiz but I took the one apart in a 91 chev pickup and tightened the bolts and put it back together. And it works
, so if I can do it anyone can. Jim

I have to remember the $500.00 price! I recently completely went through the steering column from a customer's 850 Versatile tractor, to the point of cutting a few inches off of a common Chevy pickup column and welding it to the Versatile's column, as some of the "tabs" had been broken off, and I haven't billed him yet!

(Versatile used Oldsmobile (Tornado, I believe) steering columns.)
