Another Tire Rant!!

(quoted from post at 15:34:04 02/14/14)
The way things are going, if you THINK you might need tires in a year or two, you should probably buy them now.

Actually that might not be a bad idea...with the soft rubber compounds they are using I've heard that they hold up better in stubble if they are aged a little.

(quoted from post at 15:38:10 02/14/14) It's gettin' to the point where I can't even afford to run OLD tractors....... :>(

Allan

I've been known to buy old tractors just for the rubber....

Ok $425 for a front tire but you don't say what size.that might give us a clue if it's expensive or not. was it on the shelf in town or did it have freight on for next day delivery, that makes a difference to against waiting for a stock order was it fitted in the price price or a call out to fit it on farm. Let us know and I'll tell ya if it's expensive or not, I'm gettin pretty good at figuring out the phone cough and being polite to guys, when they tell me prices these days. then calling around somewhere else L.O.L.
Called a main dealer the other day for a starter $1000 or $400 for a solenoid, that would not fix the problem! Called local starter guy right after, got a better make new starter than OEM, air freighted in for 10.30 am next day, for $457 including taxes and $40 shipping.
Kinda makes a guy wonder sometimes.

14L16.1SL four rib, 10 ply.

Re-used the old tube and watched two young bucks fight that thing with four foot tire irons for an hour and a half.

Counter guy says that they're not making that tire anymore?

Check with Graham tire in Desmoine Iowa. I think he can get you a much better price, even it has to be shipped. Chuck
It is a Titan tire.

I remember eight years ago shaking my head walking out of a farm supply store after paying 500.00 for a single barrel carb for my Ford 2000 gas tractor

Not to be a jerk, but think about it, four hundred bucks for a FRONT tractor tire? It hasn't been that long maybe three years that I bought 18.4X38 cheaper than that!

There has to be a point when we just say no, and I am getting closer to it every day. Tuesday I bought a half inch brass pipe plug and 6 plastic standard push in fuses $16 at O'Reilly....

The '49 JD A I just bought for $1600 has 2 matched
14.9x38's that you can still read the size on the
face of the tread. It's a running tractor, the
purchase was a no brainer!

Stumpy

That's what I paid 7 years a go for 13.6x38 for my SMTA. It gets better. That was for a pair of Firestones, carry out. I gave the old ones away. They would bring 600 dollars today.

Allan Late seeing this today! Supper will not set well! Seems to me the next time it will probably be cheaper using Airplane tires IMO! It will be well worth checking into! Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.
I know it isn't the same comparing your Big Girl to your 966, But I have had airplane tires on mine for 20 yrs wouldn't go back to regular tractor tires if you gave them to me! Plus my 966 has a loader on it! Anyway.....

Hi
Allen that would Kinda make sense for that tire.
A customer of mine put 2 on his 5488 2 years ago up here in Canada. and i think they were about $300 each then. Tires up here have shot up since then. bet you paid about $80 for Bucko and his buddy to fit it also if it took them that long.
I remember the day I put 4 cheapo 16.9x30 tires on a county 954 for $1200 back in 04 now I can't get 2 for that!.
Regards Robert

Just old,

The tire was starting to open up on it's face. Kinda wonder if it might have been original to the tractor.

The other side has just been replaced.

Allan

graham tire is ok but the mannager at the des moines is a jerk. will not do business with them at all business of him. he treats people terrible.

Needed a 7.50x18 triple rib this summer and Firestone wanted $465 for a 6 ply. Jobber wanted $125 for a 8 ply from India. Took the no brainer and put two Jobber 8 plys on.

I am with you. Have a new set of 12.5/80-18s for the front of the tractor. Looking for 17.5L-24s and rims for the rear. Sticker shock killed me. My backhoe has the Goodyear IT525s, figured I would get the same. Might end up with used or Titans. I know Titan owns Goodyear but those 525s are pricey.

local lead mine (now closed) used to buy tires for their earth moving equipment a year ahead and store them in the underground maintenance area. They claimed that if they stored them in a cool place for a year they lasted twice as long as they did when put in service new. When you are replacing tires that cost in the thousands, that adds up.

Flotation tires are expensive.... The last 16.5L-16.1's that I bought several years ago were over 550 at the time. I hope you got a Firestone but I suspect by the price that you didn't...
My next step is to convert to 445/65-22.5 truck rubber as I'm not going to pay that kind of money for a bloody tire.
