I have a very large German Shorthaired Pointer. He was once a top notch field trial dog but now he"s "retired" and lives the life a a good ol" fashioned farm dog.

He does a really good job of keeping varmints like foxes, raccoons, possums and coyotes away from our barn and hen house.

Still, the advice of the previous forum member works well. 22LR.

We had a couple of them hanging around hunting mice and voles in the pastures. Went out and hollered at them and they never came back. I took the gun out but when I saw what they were doing didn't have the heart to kill them for just doing what they do. Now if that was a coyote....

It's amazing how much stuff like that a dog will keep away.

When I lived at home our dog died and then the next year the ground hogs and cats were trying to move right into the buildings.

Where I live I have a full time outside dog on duty and she does a good job but is getting pretty old now.

I fed this little guy hot dogs for about 2 weeks until he was dead in frt of the house one morning, not a good testimonial for hot dogs.

we have great pyrenees and there are no critters in within a half mile of the home -- if it moves its dead in one bite-- the local cats have no problem -- they are a guard dog that dont quit -- fox and coyotes no problem -- run em off or kill them--

What I wouldn"t give to have foxes back around here. 1990 or so, coyotes started moving in to the area drove the fox out for the most part. I have seen 3 fox in the last 10 years, see at least 4 coyotes a week if not more.

In the end, they do serve the same purpose for me of keeping the rabbits down around my trees. I prefer the fact that fox tend to be a little less of a pack animal versus the coyote. Biggest coyote shot this year so far was 70 lbs.
Mid-Michigan.
