8 Corvettes Swallowed By Huge Sinkhole

I can just see how this will go:

Ins: thank you for calling. How may I help you?

Museum: we need to assistance.

Ins: what for?

Museum: we had 6 mil. Worth of cars fall in a hole.....

INS: what are they in there for?

Museum: safe sTorage of course. Now we want them back, but they are stuck. Can we get a tow?

tupperware two-seaters, the last good ones built were before the early seventies...lol,, no great loss with the new ones..

How many does that leave? 1.7 million or so?
Not that they're bad cars, but way overrated.
Still sad to see any part of American history destroyed.

No where on the planet can one buy Corvette performance for anything near Corvette price.

Been that way for decades.

Dean

guys,,, all kiddin around aside ,,You gotta admit .. this is strange ,,,how in the world can anyone imagine a hole forming perfectly inside the dome ??? ,I recall all the dirt work when they built this place ,certainly one would think everything was done rite .Makes a fella wonder about I-65 ???? its rite there a stones toss away , I would bet this is part of Mammoth Cave ..... probably belched and thus a new hole was born ... the whole ordeal seems surreal .seems like Austin powers movie gone badly,, or perhaps the Chinese have successfully tunneled thru,, and are stealin vettes

o you mean that as a good thing hope not much cheaper priced cars with better performance

I had that stop in my travel plans for this weekend. I'm not going anywhere near there, now. I have been to Monmouth caverns before. I always wondered what kept the ceiling up. Now I know... It is nothing, and you are really taking a risk.

Glad it didn't happen a few days later. I would have been there.

What other car for 53,000 can give you 460 horsepower, 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, pull over 1 lateral G on the skid pad, an 11 second 1/4mile, give you features such as launch control, an Elocking rear differential, and magnetic ride control???

Monmouth Caverns? WHERE is that? Perhaps close to Jellystone Park where Yogi and Boo-Boo live?

Perhaps you meant Mammoth Cave? It happens to be a National Park, like Yellowstone is.

Over rated ?, so what was wrong with the one you had? Had mine for eleven or twelve years, it's been to Colorado a couple times, black hills, Arizona, Branson Mo., Smokey Mts. and a lap around Lake Michigan.
Only thing I didn't like about it was trying to keep it clean, all black. Fun car, sold it for $2000. more than I paid for it, wish I'd of kept it long enough for the kids to have driven it.

I grew up about 18 miles West of Bowling Green. Needless to say, this is the talk of the town right now. There are actually 3 sink holes that collapsed yesterday, but 2 of them are in a different part of town.

Bowling Green is sitting on top of the Mammoth Cave system. They have had problems for years with sink holes. It's just kinda ironic one happened to open up inside the museum.

Guy from my hometown has a vette in the museum. Bet he was sweating bullets until he found out it wasn't his.

There is more video footage on the wbko.com website now of the collapse happening and footage of a remote control helicopter going down in the hole to survey the damage.

I to saw that there was no rebar or any other reinforcing in that concrete slab. Any time you pour a concrete slab you should put reinforcement into the mix. In the case of the Corvette museum the floor might have sagged but it would still hold until the cars could have been removed.
Same thing for the house in Florida where a man in bed was killed when a hole opened and swallowed him, bed and all. Some contractor saved a couple of dollars and killed a man.

an't blame the contractor for the sinkhole and the resulting death.

That would be like blaming a golf course builder for the killing of a player by a lightning strike cause he failed to build a roof over the course

ell since you asked buy mustang gt for around 28k put 20 in it and you have a corvette crusher still under the budget btw i have fox body that busts corvettes all the time love to see that look like i have way more money in mine why did you just beat me?also little higher priced bout zr-1 price but a ford gt stock spanks them all day long zr-1 included and your not getting 11 sec. quarter time either with base vette

Talking about a reasonably priced turn key hot rod right off the production line with warranty.
Anybody can build a one off souped up car.

didnt know ford gt was a souped up car thought it was factory did buick ever build anything faster than the speed of smell? didn't think so and i dont see why a new mustang wouldn't have a warranty

What? Why would you compare a bad construction job with an act of nature. Anyone knows that any good builder is going to put down the best foundation he can or not build it at all. ARE YOU IN THE CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS? Or do you make it a habit to defend poor builders?

greed that was a poor comparison

If you watched the security camera video, the floor held for about 15 seconds after the ground under it fell. It takes a lot more than a 6" slab to span 30' with any weight on it, more like a concrete beam. You can also see the broken rebar in the helicopter video. It literally sheared most of it off. A few of the pieces were bent down.

well since you asked buy mustang gt for around 28k put 20 in it .......i have fox body that busts corvettes all the time

Anybody can "soup up" just about anything to beat a vette given enough money so whats your point? I've seen a Monza beat everything that lined up next to it.

And FYI a 2014 Mustang GT MSRP is 31k....

(quoted from post at 13:42:44 02/13/14) shelby also comes to mind which i believe busted your Corvette also bout the same price new too with warranty and all

The 2014 Shelby GT 500 has like 180 more hp that the corvette and the only place it will beat a Corvette is in the 1/4mile and even then only by about .03 seconds. Put them on anything other than a flat straight road and the GT500's solid rear axle will get left in the dust. And also FYI MSRP for the GT500 is 55,110; MSRP for a Vette Z51 53,800.....

not getting 11 sec. quarter time either with base vette

There's plenty of test out there with 2014 vettes running low 12's and even a couple 11.9x passes.

So once again show me a factory production car with a warranty, A/C, tilt, cruise, etc that can touch the Vette's performance numbers for the same price.

the point was less money can be put in a car and be a better performing car that being said i see you didn't wanna even mention the ford gt its over 100k i know and 53k to 55k is comparable price in my book and 31k is fully optioned see it took you a while to look that up im just going off top of my head not checking websites fact is your a chevy guy im a ford guy im not gonna convince you and vice versa dont like em not ever gonna buy 1 so have a good day and sorry to the fellow who wrote this post not my intention to hijack your post and go on a rant

The Ford GT is ancient history at this point, its been out of production for 8 years already. In terms of automotive technology that may as well be the stone age.

ya and it was faster than the vette with a 6 cylinder turbo tells you a lot took you a while to look that 1 up but i actually like the grand nationals still ford stopped building gt because it takes that long for vette to catch up on technology look up youtube still bustin lingenfelter vettes to this day btw 5.4 liter ford won engine masters challenge this year 1.2.3.and bbf won hp in same contest nuff said

You don't seem to know very much about Buicks or any other GM performance vehicle.
Why would I have to look it up when my GN is sitting in the shed ?

I had two, a '63 and a '66. I also drove a friend's '78.
There was nothing "wrong" with any of them.
But to me "America's Sports Car" was more of a muscle car.
Lots of power, plenty of torque but lacking the
suspension/steering/handling to effectively put it to the ground.

Don't get me wrong, I love muscle cars.
I would love nothing more than to own an A-body Hemi Cuda.
But it too, is a muscle car, not a sports car.

niether do you 99 ? for a gnx come on now i was born at night but not last night anyways if you have 1 good for you being its a 85-87 i bid you good day sir i just fell off the turnip truck it hurt lol

yep. I was tired. I fat fingered it and don't recall the spelling. but that is it. jellystone.

I drove 18 hours in a 22 hour straight day, then 8 hours after 6 hours sleep. maybe a commercial trucker would thinkg that is nothing, but I rarely drive 5 miles from home during the winter.

I'm not a GM or Chevy guy but I love 'Vetts. The only ones I didn't care for were the ones through the "70s.Before and after, great cars if a little on the heavy side.My favorites are '61/'62'.The current models are outstanding. You can't get that kind of performance and amenities for that kind of money anywhere else.
