What I wish that I had runing

Many years ago I bought a John Deere 1956 70 Diesel. AS the years have gone bye I have been busy working on many other tractors in my hobby. There is only one thing my dads wishes are to get those farmalls runing and those I.H tractors up and runing. Some friends of mine tell me get that there deer runing and you will have the world. Is true about a John Deere two cylinder does it sound like nothing eles. Iwish I could have a challange to get that old Deere up and runing. My dad does not like them but man I look at mine I see those words Nothing runs like a deere.

What do you think the 70 D. needs..?

You get that 70 D running and you will be using it often..!
So easy on fuel and a pleasure to operate it, listening to that engine pumping out TORQUE..!!
Get to work on it or 15 years will get by and you will have lost those years you could have been running that 70..
You will be glad you did..!

I think you are right. The book says the two cylinder is 371 cubic inches which is bigger than a 350 chevy engine. Which is bigger than a farmall M 249 cubic inches. The book says it is a five plow tractor the Famall M is a two plow. This is the biggest tractor in my collection and yes i want to hear this John Deere run. I think it is comeing soon.

That 70D is a great tractor, but if your dad is still with you
put the JD second. It will outlast you both.

I handle 4x16" in 3rd gear with my 720 in some mighty tough going here in Central, Ohio.
That is plowing a minimum of 7" deep and in some ground not plowed for 50 years..
I have 3 sets of rear weights and 300-350# on the Front.
5x14" would be mighty impressive, but even a 3x16" would be handy.
Don't waste your time with anything smaller on that 70..if you do, you won't be able to heat it Bark..!

I have 15 Farmalls(10 running) and a Model A JD.I had to have a 'token' JD.The two banger is fun to run,to listen as it is really pulling. It's a 'hoot'!

Neighbor had a 720 Diesel that was as much trouble as the lemon G that we had. He traded his TD6 in on the 720; only took him a week in the field to realize that he'd made a mistake. After a couple expensive overhauls, he traded the 720 in on a TD9.

My son had a 70D a few years ago. A very stout tractor and a great sound. Wish he had kept it.
The only change to it I would make is switch to electric start. Unless you are going to work it a long time each time you use it. They have a huge amount of torque.

I'm a farmall guy myself, just because that's what was around me as a kid.

But I do love the sound of deeres. It's not anything great in and of itself - it has to grow on you. Once you use it for a few seasons, it'll grow on you too. You need some positive association with the sound.

I gotta say I'm also a big fan of the hand clutch.
Not that I screw up a lot with a foot clutch, but a hand clutch is just so simple and fool proof. It's a personal preference type of thing I guess, but I prefer it.

We farm only about 40 acres and our70D is the big tractor on our place.

Take a look at "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO_UjThnxiM&feature=share">Big John</a>" our 55 Model 70 Diesel working down in the bottom.

Maybe some of his other videos will spark some inspiration.

Hope you enjoy your 56 Model 70 diesel.

Brent,I rescued a John Deere B from the scrap yard.It was actually completely apart and in boxes.I put it together and it turned out great, and ran very well.I took it to our fair and someone made a comment that they would love to own it.I traded them for a FARMALL M.I cant stand owning a John Deere

The lever for the live PTO on the Model 70 is just below the battery box on the right side.

The live PTO is engaged once the tail gate is closed.

Have a 1955 70D- it is easy on fuel. Use a 3-16 plow- could handle more, but why push it. I took out the no-good pony and put an electric starter on it. Turns over once and starts- don;t use it in the winter though. James, your video round baling is great. Good luck Brent with getting it going, you won't regret it.

My Dad bought one new when I was two I remember it being delivered. Easy on fuel will pull 4 14's Dad would not let us use it in the winter. Put injectors from 730 in it, and shorten the control rack so it would go wide open, it would pull 18 ft disk in 4th! Did not do that but one time. Bosch friend was grinning ear to ear

Ok,I saw you clutching and shifting gears, nobody around here ever does it that I have seen.(Backing up to dump the bale,)
