ford 3500 grinding axle, etc

I have a new project with a ford 3500 backhoe/loader. i've just gotten it and after examination i've found some issues. any help would be appreciated. i drove it home about 8 miles, the new temp gauge never got over 130. it was about 45 degrees outside, but i was running it pretty good. it did slobber a little bit out of the exhaust. I'm thinking someone has removed the thermostat?

my most serious concern is loud grinding coming from rear end when moving, sounds mostly on rear right, but its hard to hear with her running. its definately grinding on something. on this machine would this likely be an axle bearing? or something else?

thanks to all,
david

Try raising the rear wheels off the ground getting the weight off and spin the wheels. Let us know if you still hear the noise.

I raised the back end completely off the ground and put the tractor in gear to get the tires turning and it was quiet - no noise. at least not the noise i hear when on the ground. I tried in 1st gear and second and no noise. i noticed the diff lock pedal was down the whole time, so i lifted it, and did 1st gear and 2nd gear again and still no noise.

now what?

thanks, david
