Thought i was doing good after surgery in november everthing moves feeling very little pain ready to go back to work right?
She was a cute little thing southern girl she was stretching and bending the arm going places it hadnt gone in a while.so she asked me if i could lift 5 lbs hey no problem little did i know i can lift with the forearm muscle to the elbow but hold the arm straight and lift with the shoulder muscle well i got a can of soup about 2 ft of the counter .i have heard recovery can take time and it looks that sure cut me down .back to the exercises .

Did she make you walk up the wall with the fingers on that hand? I think that was the hardest part for me. IIRC, it was about six months or better before the doctor said I was recovered. 90 per cent is the best I got.

Yes sir I yes feeling good after 9 months then we had to houses tobacco I hang middle and bottom rail after we were done doc said I was back to wear I started pushed it to far to fast and said more than likely I'm going to lose 30% of it all because I thought I was super man again and I'm only 27 but this superman just got the truth put to him don't push it

Yes i got about 10 pages of exercises on the wall .thanks for the six month tip that explains things .the doc asked me how much i handle at work and i told him 85 lbs min. he said next appt is april 28 .hr person hit the roof at that .your telling me than same as doc and pt lady relax and get it right dang it how do guys do it on welfare im going nuts just feeding cattle

My Therapist told me the Shoulder is THE WORST joint to get healed and recovered:
- - gotta exercise it to get it better; BUT
- - too much effort or repetitions or STRAIN will surely screw it up.

So, I felt GRRREATT, did some hoeing and chainsawing, and proved him RIGHT!!

TWICE!!

Best Wishes!
John

City people and docs don't know what it is to be a farmer we just can't set in the house all the time when things have to eat or be done cause u sur can't find good help theses days

I have had back surgery. My neighbor had about the same thing told me a story right after I had mine.
He told me after he was feeling good so he through a couple bales of hay, felt fine the next day so he helped some more, five years later he was to have surgery again. I did just what the Dr. told me to do and I am 95% as good as I ever was, 12 years later.(I can t touch my toes, steel rods do not bend) Do what they tell you or save your money and stay home.

Have had both shoulders done.
Worked in local dietary fiber plant 3 yrs, did a lot of lifting, I could throw a 50 sack 30ft (physically lifted 35,000 lbs a 12hr day). Finally tore the left shoulder.

Surgery on the left shoulder in 2007 by the locate expert Mpls,MN that was said to have written and taught the procedure to others. I was lifting hay bales the next week, but still took it easy most of the time. In therapy, they tried to over work the shoulder, had lots of pain, the doc chewed them out, said don't push so hard, they did take it gentle after that and it was still 9 months or more before every normal. Seems to have no loss of use.
In 2012 had the right shoulder done by another Doc, I had very little pain afterward and therapist couldn't believe what I was able to do with out pain, (again could move hay bales by 3rd day) it seemed that I was 2-3 months ahead of most at healing (could reach for the ceiling almost full range), but seems the Doc trimmed things different inside the shoulder and I had aquired a click/pinch in the joint at which point it was painful to move past that spot. No matter what therapy was done, the click could not be removed. Now most pain gone but lost about 20% use in my right -mostly cus of the click/pinch. Took almost a year to seem normal, but still have some discomfort if I move wrong. Left side (1st surgery) still seems like new.
At 62yrs I feel I'm doing well.
Wish you well!

Farmer,Guys I have had Both of my shoulders Replaced! not Fixed. My Dr the Preeminent Shoulder Dr in Austin, Tx. This is all he does Not Knees or other parts Only the shoulder.
He Understood I Farm and Ranch, But with replacements, THERE Would Be somethings to Curtail others, Every once in a while, while some still I would Never do again.
I would Never Drive a steel post or dig a post-hole with a manual post-hole digger, or use a Stud-bar to bust out rocks in the bottom of the hole.
I wouldn't be able to throw a Baseball like before or swing a Bat, like before. I can throw to some degree with our son.
Useing a hammer on an anvil doesn't seem to bother mine at all.
My Dr said most folks want to Do what they were doing when they damaged the Shoulder, Be Smart about what you are doing, figure out a better way to accomplish what needs to be done. Lift the 50 lb sack of feed and place it on the tailgate of th3e pickup Don't throw it.
Ultimately it took me over a yr for each shoulder to really begin to feel and act normal. It was over 2 yrs before I really pushed them. Why?....
I didn't want to have to do any re-dos!!!
I will say I believe there are times I should go back and do some of my rehab exercises to keep my strength. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

I hear you guys talking about shoulder problems!!!!! Two years ago was involved in truck accident!!!! Ended up with a bad left shoulder, have a metal plate on collar bone next to shoulder joint, my shoulder blade ended up in 5 pieces, tore ligaments, tendons and muscles in shoulder!!!! Had three surgeries and therapy for over year before they determined it is as it will always be!! Cant lift my arm over shoulder height without aid of right arm nor can I put a gal. of milk in frig,
Know most of you are thinking "at least its your left shoulder",,,,,,,would be better if weren't left handed,,,,,,lol!!!!!!!

I've had 2 rotator cuff surgeries and a full knee replacement.

I said this in another post, but I'll say it again. Do NOT rush your recovery or you will mess up your shoulder worse than it was before. Three months before you can do much at all and a year or a bit more for a full recovery.

And just for the record, a knee replacement is a piece of cake compared to a rotator cuff recovery.

bad shoulders are a tough one.
amazing how our bodies can adapt though.
position of your elbow means all.
never let it come up too far. If you have bad shoulders, there is never any 'completely healed'
your range of motion may come back, but strength moves with a high elbow...forget it, you'll just re-injure yourself.
train yourself, even if it means putting a strap from your elbow to your belt to limit upward movement of your elbow.
Other muscles, joints will get stronger to compensate.
Believe me, it will be awkward at first, but your body will learn.
tip: when you are housebound right after the injury/repair,
when not doing rehab,
take a long belt and strap both arms tightly to your sides.
then go about your normal routine with 'short arms'
good training

Lifting with your arm straight out is the longest recovery, give it time and follow instructions.

Thanks for all the tips its so hard to just not do something usefull. pushing on a wall just dont cut it but the votes in back to excercise.
Maybe i can find a cute chick in one of those fancy outfits the wear get proper motavation

Jack,

You have no idea what you are talking about. Doing to much will set you back weeks, if not sending you back to surgery.

My second surgery was about 3 months after the first because I lifted more than I should and tore the cuff again. Rehab is vital to recovery. Expect a year or more to recover.

I know exactly what you are saying. Every morning the treadmill for 30 minutes and then 35 minutes of exercises on the arm. I am not pushing to do the heavy stuff. just started lifting the hay bales to the end gate of the pickup. Lots of bales on the ground from taking the ones that were easier. I had surgery the middle of October so I am still "exercising" the arm with 2 lb weights. I will be ready to go by the time spring rolls around. Bud
