Dealing with people

Looking for a tractor to play with, see several advertised locally, but are way overpriced.A guy near me has a 630 JD for sale.Just an old common tractor, narrow front,no fenders, bad paint. He wants 8500 for it.He said it was a very hot collector tractor.I can buy restored ones for that or less.Same way on craigslist, rusty JD M advertised for 5000.The guy got mad when I made him an offer.I'd like to have the 630,but I guess i'll just forget it.

I know I"d like to sell anyone one of those
tractors for their asking price, But didn"t
say I"d buy them @ that price.

Ya saw an ad today on Criag's list. The guy has a pair of Farmall Hs he wants to sell for $3200 and yes they both run but one he says need work. Guess I should put the 4 Hs I have on for say #3500 and see if I get any bites, like ya they will still be here next year

When you see something way overpriced just walk away and say nothing. You probably wont get it bought at that time, and you just made seller mad. You make him mad and he might refuse to talk to you latter. Maybe latter he will come down on price and you can buy it then

Prices on c-list in general seem to be ridiculously high -- tools, tractors, cars, trucks, etc. I'd like to know what people are thinking.

Just keep looking, you'll find something reasonable after a while. Being in a hurry always seems to cost more. Auctions are often a way to buy a tractor cheaper than craigslist, at least around here, but you have no idea of the real condition and usually it needs more work than you first think it will.

look and see if you have any farm consignment auctions coming up. many of the fairgrounds here in illinois have em as fundraisers. lot of equipment gets sold. good day of fun, and the pulled pork sammiches are great!!

Mike, don't want to start a war, but the JD H, JD M command a large price tag. IMHO, all JD's are overpriced. Look for IH, Massey, Ford, WD 45, there are many old tractors on craigslist for around $2000-$4000. Some in very good shape too.

Well said.
Just lay back and search on craigslist about 3 times a day, everyday and you will find what you are looking for.

" you have no idea of the real condition and usually it needs more work than you first think it will"

True statement, but of course it also applies to craigslist.

Everything used is sold As Is, and a crooked seller won"t give a refund if the item is misrepresented. All the more reason to look it over and offer what you think it's worth, not what the seller wants.

If the man wants $8,500.00 and you don't want to pay over $5,000.00 for example, why bother calling or looking and wasting everyone's time. Move on to something that looks like it's priced close to what you'd be willing to pay. Low ball offers are seldom appreciated.

Look here on this site in photo ads under tractors.
Many are listed everyday and a number of them seem to be priced right. I have bought some from the site but not as many as I would like because many are too far from my place. Seems to me that quite a few are in the Midwest.

WOW! So that makes my old well worn 630 with wide front, 3pt, front weights but no fenders and old faded paint job worth at least twice that!! Didn't know I had a gold mine sitting in the shed! He'll be greatly disappointed when he does get it sold for less than half that. Most people selling old tractors think their tractor is the most valuable one in the county. JIm

I think a lot of them are just testing to see if they can actually get that much and don't really want or need to sell unless they can get a super high price. I have a couple H's I would sell if some clown offered me enough but otherwise I sure have no intention of selling them anytime soon.

A lot of tractors and equipment on craigslist are being sold by heirs or posted by adult children for their elderly parents. In many cases they have no idea what the equipment will actually bring but they may have researched past sales or ads on the internet and think that asking price always equals selling price. I would not think twice about offering half or less than the asking price, never know if reality has begun to sink in or not when you talk to people, worse they can do is say no.

Sometimes people price tractors like I do kids--"Wouldn't take a million dollars for any of them, but wouldn't give a nickel for a carload more". Everything is worth more when you own it.

Hi
Biggest problem I Found selling used tractors is low ball offers on tractors worth the $10.000 asking price.
Had a nice Massey here full re built trans, 6 near new tires, everything worked.Had a real nice 795 Allied loader on.

I kept getting low balled at $5000. The story as,"My Buddy says" you can buy this in the local auction for $5000. Kinda went quiet when I said for $5000 you can buy a wrecked, worn out Massey needing new tires, all the work thats done on this one, they don"t have a near new or any loader fitted, that"s worth $4000 used on it"s own all day long, round here. To get them the same as this would cost $9000 minimum on top so around $14000 total!.
In the end I got fed up with this all the time, and parts prices.
I quit doing it and just fix for others and farm a bit now. if a guy wants his tractor fixed he just says do it and send the bill.
I don"t miss these wasters at all anymore.
Regards Robert

I follow Dad's rule of thumb(whatever that means) on selling stuff. If you want to sell something for , lets say, 500.00, ask 1000.00, settle for 750.00. That way you both walk away happy.
