OT Remote Car Starters

Never had remote start on a vehicle.

Thought it would be nice but decided not a good idea when young grand son found and pushed panic button on car key pad. Horn was blowing and I instantly thought, funny, but not if he had pushed start if I had remote start. Attached garage with running car and garage door down would not be good.

Friends say I worry too much. Engine would only run 10 minutes, still not good, and remote start would not work unless car doors locked. If kid is pushing buttons he could hit lock button also.

Am I worrying too much ?

I have had remote start on the last two vans(fuel inj) with no trouble. The start is push two buttons at the same time, I can't do it with one hand. It starts the car and lets it run 10 min. then it quits, we like it. On the other hand I have had three tractors start themselves. One backed over a haybine and caught fire, the other one climed a barn post and the last was a gas that just hit a tree and stalled. Whatever you do put a carbon monoxcide detcter in the attached garage!

My remote isn't that easy to work. The door lock button has to be pressed twice then the start. The start button has to be held down for a bit not just pressed. The big problem you have is--Why does he have the remote in the first place?

Len, Great question. This was 4 or 5 years ago when Grandson was about 4.

After that when he was here I hung keys up where he could not get them.

After that happened however, could not get the notion out of my mind that if I had remote start, and he started vehicle by mistake I might not have had a chance to "learn from my mistake ".

All your comments tell me remote start is not likely to happen accidentally with one accidental push of one button.

Thanks, Bill

We have had remote starters in the last 2 vans. I would not be without them. I have mine programed for 8 minutes of run time then its shuts off. I think you worry too much. Keep the keys where you know where their at when he is around. Bud

Mark is right on the brakes. Mine came with 2006 Lucerne when new. You can't do anything with that car if it is not in park. You have to press the brake pedal down to get it out of park. The remote won't work when the key is in the switch either.

I pulled a neighbors tractor out of a ditch where he claimed the kid next door had driven it. Two weeks later he was using the tractor to rake hay and he left it for a few minutes with it shut down. Looked over to where the tractor was parked and saw it moving. The thing had started itself.

Bought my girl friend one for her car for Christmas a year ago. She loves it! She doesn't have any kids at home and no garage so no worries there. Are you worrying to much? Probably so, but if it bothers ya, don't do it.

My BIL had an aftermarket unit installed on a Dodge Dakota pickup.

He has a detached garage about 30 feet from his front door, and one cold morning he reached out the front door and hit the remote start for the pickup. The shifter hadn't clicked all the way over into park, the pickup started up in reverse, and backed out through the garage door, down his driveway, and stalled across the street.

I've never had one, but I'm sure a factory installed unit would have safeguards so that couldn't happen.

A kid that worked at a local auto parts house, put remote start in his manual shift Jeep CJ.
He thought it was really cool till he must have pushed the button in his pocket and the jeep ran thru the front door of the store....

We have two remote starters. One is factory and the other aftermarket. Have to push both remotes 2 times for a count of 2 and key has to be out of ign and doors locked. Both will die when you take out of park if not done just right. Love them. When the preacher calls for the last song, I pull out the remote. Car is nice and warm in the winter and cool in the summer :)

Have a friend who used to sell the after market variety-he would NOT recommend them to anyone! Many times the vehicle would have a no start situation, they would tow it to their mechanic. Mechanic sees the remote start and freaks out, claims it is the remote starter system. Tow it to the after market installer, check it out, nothing wrong. Tow it back to the mechanic and finally he has to figure it out. Imagine the towing bill on that one! I personally will not have one unless it is a factory unit!

Bout 3 years ago, some kid (17 or 18) that had been sent to live with his grandmother to "get away from his problems" killed a 14 yr old girl and burned and buried her by the cemetary near here. Couple days later the guy who was living here at the time had a scanner and heard that the police were working there when the car horn started beeping. He jumped for the 12 gauge, she grabbed the kid and went for the bedroom, got the door shut and realized their daughter had gotten a hold of the car remote.

It was pretty funny when he told me about it the next morning.

If anybody wants one I have a kit that I bought for a Suburban several years ago, but wife got rid of it before I got the kit installed.

I've had several and love them. 3 were after market ones. One of them sensed the ambient temp and when the car had been setting 4 hours and the temp was 0F or colder it would start and run 15 minute. Never had a cold start problem with that car. Never had any issues with any of out remote starters.

Of the aftermarket ones I liked the "Bulldog" brand one the best. It came with a code and you went to their site, entered the code, the year make and model it was being installed in and you could down load the instructions and wiring diagram for your vehicle. That was also the one that auto started at 0 or colder.

I'll never have another vehicle without one. We keep the keys out of reach of grandkids.
