When I got done with the clean up from the last snow , I trimmed a few cows feet today. Few before and after pics. 10 done 50 more to go. from the looks of the snow in my yard , I'll have time to do them before spring planting. I can easy do 10 a day , hoof trimmers charge $40.00 per cow , I charge me nothing! dirty job but , there are lots of dirty jobs on a dairy farm. My old F800 looks like Rumple Stiltskin , having a long nap. Bruce

Looks like you did a good job. $40 a cow seems a bit high, even for in Canada. Would you like to come and work for me???

Neat pictures Bruce! I would like to see more pictures of your chute. The guy that trims my cows charge $12.00 per cow. Will have to post some pics next time he's here in June. How often do you trim yours? He comes here twice a year and trims about 20 cows in a day. John

Around here trimmers charge 10 bucks per corner ,so $40.00 per cow. More if they have to do wraps. Afraid I can't come work for you , as for what I charge myself , if I charged you the same , I 'd starve.

Wait! What? Cows have to be trimmed? Never heard that one before. I had horses for years and learned how to do that myself (no shoes, only rode on dirt roads/trails). Never heard of cows though?

Forgot to add that there are cows all around me in pastures and I have never seen them being trimmed. I would like to see somebody trim the herd of very large Longhorns across the road....lol

For years my parents never had anything done. Now the cows are spending more time on concrete and they are having more hoof related injuries. A trimmer comes with his mobile chute and he'll trim a dozen or so cows (Dad never runs the whole herd through) and ussually I have about 8 wraps to cut off 5 days later. Dad's to stiff and vulnerable to cut the wraps himself so I get that job.

No idea what the guys charges, as it's not my business what Dad pays.

Looks like Bruce's guy has a simple chute. My guy has one that tilts after the critter goes in.....

Bruce's guy is Bruce . In my shoot , the cow remains standing. There are a few that use tilt tables around , but most use a hydraulic powered stand-up style. My little shoot is fine for me but ,if I was going to do this every day ,I too would want a power shoot. This unit is hand crank and small enough that I can keep it in the stable all the time. So If a cow turns up lame , I can turn up her foot tor a look very quick and easy. I try to put all the cows though during the winter.

Thanks, I never thought about the concrete part. Might have to start shoeing them next... JD could come by and take a whack at that...lol

Beef critters or heifers out on pasture don't normally need much foot care. Dairy animals in confinement facilities often do. Just the nature of the game.

Every spring I have a mess of sheep and goats that need trimming. Always amazes me that I can turn them out into rough pasture and 2 weeks later almost all their feet look perfect. It's all the ledge and rock we have. Sure save a lot of hassle for me!

I'm glad to see you taking care of them Bruce. It always pains me to see cattle hobbling through a milking parlor.

glad my business card said "Horseshoeing". no mules, no cattle, no burros. I did trim a pot bellied pig for a friend ..... once

Sometime its hard to think that the feet can be the most important part on any beast. When I was milking cows they did a lot of traveling and the feet were on reduced maintenence. I do know that we had some whose working time were shortened due to foot issues.
I would start clipping cows about this time of year, they sure looked a lot sharper and were easier to keep clean. (Milk inspector liked it too)
