So my dad was using my tractor to brush hog mow. When mowing it lost power and died.Changed the fuel filter thinking it was plugged.Did not help at all.Looked at the old one and it was clean. So here is the funny part let it sit awhile it will fire up and run for 15-30 seconds. Will not throttle up but idle.Take the fuel line off turn the engine over pumps fuel good. Then put the line back on and start it.It will run longer 45 seconds to a minute then die.You guys have any thoughts on my problem? Is it the injector pump? I am going to take it off and have it serviced. Is this the right step? Thanks guys.Big Game today.Go Seahawks.....

There's a little window on the side of the injector pump with two screws holding it on. Take that off and see if it looks like coffee grounds in there.

There's a little plastic or nylon looking washer in
those pumps that is part of the governor. They
fall apart and disintegrate after 20 or 30 years.
Cheap part- expensive fix. The parts package is
about $20, but it costs a good bit more to tear the
pump down and replace the washer.....

If engine runs after loosening the timing window screws as rrlund suggested then the check ball in the return line fitting that screws into inj is plugged with debris from the deteriorating governor drive coupler. Clean the check valve out and it may run correctly for a while.

The fellows have the problem down. It is the governor damping ring falling apart. The small pieces of rubber plug the pump up inside. The repair kit is less than $50 but you have to have a few special tools and the knowledge to replace it. I replace the governor gage with a solid one that does not have the dampening ring in it. I have done that for thirty years an never had any issues.

The first picture is one of the replacement governor ring.

The second is of a dampener ring that failed.

Email me. I rebuild them but It would depend on where your at. Usually you can find local guys that can replace the dampening ring. You do not have to set any fuel metering adjustments. So if it was running correctly before it just needs cleaned out and the ring either replaced or the new style gage.

When the ring failed on my 4010 the return line became plugged at the injector bleed screws on the return line.

So I took the little cover off hoping to find the black bits of ugly.(coffee grounds)To my surprise it was good clean diesel. My dad said he was taking a look at it.Started it and of coarse it died, but he said he could hear noise in the fuel tank.So with this little bit more information.Do you think I take the injector pump off and have it serviced? (cost $500 ) Or do I order parts and go at it myself? Thanks again for your help.

If I'm understanding you correctly your dad started tractor with timing cover loose(removed) and engine started then died??? Have you checked for good fuel flow from tank to inj pump?

Thought i would give the solution to my John Deere 4010 no run problem. It was the Governor that failed cost me $600.00 to get her fixed but she is back to work.Hats off to you guys and this forum for all the great information ...Thanks again Blaine
