Here's an odd one for you guys

About a month or 2 ago, my dusk to dawn light quit working. Being that it's winter and the pole is surrounded by a whole bunch of snow, I wasn't too eager to look into it. Thursday night I was blowing snow about 15-20' from the pole and something caught my eye- it was the bulb from that fixture... I picked it up and put it in the garage for now. Looks like it may be burnt out, but guessing it's not, just has some age on it.

My question would be.... How in the world did it come unscrewed? We've been living here for a little over 4 years and I have no idea how long the bulb has been in there.

Don I have had them come unscrewed. I also have had the base break out of the fixture too. The winds can work the bulb loose.

I guess that was my suspition, as the wind blasts out of the west here and there's nothing to block the wind. Good thing that it fell in a soft blanket of snow right?

As JDSeller said, wind can cause a bulb to work loose. Expansion and contraction of the socket, (heat and cold). We have indoor table lamps that we have to tighten the bulb in occasionally. They will work loose but they won't re-tighten themselves.

Your place is haunted!
Most likely it was never in tight enough in the first place. Most of us screw the bulbs in until we feel some resistance and then try the light and if it works we leave it.

Don- With WI being in the Northern Hemisphere what you are experiencing is the "Coriolis effect". In the Northern hemisphere it causes clockwise rotation on things with mass. Since, I figure your bulb was screwed into a socket where the bulb hangs down, you would be reversing the "Coriolis effect". Therefore, the bulb would 'work' itself loose over a period of time.

Remedy: I put a small 'dab' of Loc-tite on the threads of the bulb before I screw them in.

Just kidding....Happy Groundhog Day!
