antique restored tractors

Am I paranoid or is it true that the tractor hobby is on the same path as classic cars. To many times I see sales ads of tractors with asking prices below the cost of restoration. I was there once selling a classic Plymouth at half the cost of the restoration. It was always said that the best feeling in the world was viewing the fresh restoration and the worst was see it on someone elses trailer leaving your shop.

Funny you posted this. Not funny Ha Ha, but funny Huh? I just was watching the Mecum auction on RFD. There was a 43 John Deere A, good tires, high price paint job went for $1800. Probably $1000 in the paint job alone.

Classic cars have better odds. Old tractors are ony identified as neat to those of us remaining in the "field". One percent of the population or so is in that category.
There are restorable profitable tractors. UDXL, SMTADV, and select others including way old Autman Taylor, and other 100 year old beauties.
But the remainder are just for the love of the hobbie. It is like trying to make a living on 30 bushel corn on 12 acres. Jim

I think what we think of as "antique" might be changing. The old ones that most of us have collected are probably falling out of favor, but the muscle tractors from the 60s and 70s seem to be going through the roof no matter what shape they're in.

This is a hobby, never expected to make money at it. It has always been very rare to make money on a restoration sale if it is done right.

its not a for profit business, thats what drove the cars so high that only the select few excessivly rich can play, tractors are a hobby we restore certain models because they have meaning to those of us that grew up on them, among other reasons, nobody takes a tractor on trying to make money of the end result, other than a few rare examples its not going to happen

Well said and ever so true. Man really has to pick his model if he intends to have something to sell for a profit.

what your saying is true and this is why. the age group between 60 and 75 greatly influence the market of not just old tractors but other things to, such as cars. people like to have (fix up) things they can remember from there younger days. people from this age group become retired and do just that. they make up the majority of the collecting population and what they are interested in is what is ussually hot. such as tractors from the 60's or muscle cars from that same era. 40 years from now 4020's and mustangs probly wont be hot items and will sell for less than they are actually worth. what will be hot then will depend on the 60 to 75 age group at that time and what they are interested in. thats how it works.

yep, what has been said is true. as those of us a little long in the tooth are replaced by the young'uns the John Deeres and Farmalls, Fords and Chevys will be replaced by restored "antique" Kobotas and Hondas. such is life.
