Horse power

That's neat. I've seen it before. I can't believe they didn't pull the tongue right out of that forecart.

Bad part about them pulling you out is there's no starting out easy like slipping the clutch, Powers there RIGHT NOW!! lol. btdt.

yes they pulled me a few times one horse can pull one truck.i seen them try to pull a skid loader out the flipped the pull cart upside down 2 x with a team finnally put 6 on it came out.worse is if the get slack and take off quick

My dad used 2 horses to pull a jd 9500 combine out of the mud once. Was a big day for him and my brother and I. Wish I had had a camera then.

No horse expert but I think the horse on the left of the screen has the most seniority. Just watch how he moves...just another tow for him. Dad told me of different times he pulled vehicles out of the ditch with a team..often where a machine wouldn't. The story I remember best was of a thrahing machine that dropped a rear wheel into a ditch as it came around a corner. The tractor spun out and a second larger tractor was summoned to assist with no luck. The farm manager showed up, asked one of the men to go get a team and a hayfork rope and pulley. No one thought this would work . The pulley was attached to the thrashing machine the rope was run through it and tied to the tractor (anchor) The other end was attached to the team and out came the thrashing machine. I have used a the same technique to move big things with little things many times.

Honestly it looks pretty risky for the horses. If it's ice on the road, well we slip and fall and break bones just walking on ice sometimes, I'd assume horses would too. Just snow is probably ok. Hooked together like that and trying to pull would seem worse than just walking. I'd hate to have a horse of mine break a leg or get hurt--I bet their vet bills are as bad as our medical bills.

What's the thinking on this from someone who knows horses and draft horse use in particular?

They probably have steel shoes on with calks. or boron. The reason horses can trot down a slick asphalt road and not fall down. Also the reason local people around here don't care for the Amish trotting there horses down the blacktops. They pick the asphalt just like studs in tires, which are outlawed, except for ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

i have seen the horse in the middle go down not nice especially if the panic.my neighbor came up to pull me out with one horse . soon as the horse got loose it took off hit the road and started home as soon as he hit the driveway he slipped and wiped out

You don't pull on the tongue, the tongue is just to control level and turn, it's not what the tugs are hitched to. They're hitched into the frame of the cart.

As was said, boron or carbide on the shoes or caulks. Think about this though- what are your chances of slipping and falling down on the ice if you were on your hands and knees? Yeah. horses, cattle, sheep, dogs, deer, etc all fall down, but not as often as people. 4 points of contact vs 2.

Until you've been around draft horses it's probably hard to believe how much they can pull and how easy they can do it. An experienced team isn't going to hurt itself unless some human gets stupid for the most part. If you think, keep the anger and testosterone down and work WITH the horses you simply won't have a vet bill of any kind. They get sore just like we do when we over do it and a little rest and good warm up generally fix things.

I could go on for hours about this. Suffice it to say that until you've used them it's pretty hard to grasp what a decent horse or team can do, all on cheap feed and pasture and come back day after day, year after year to do it. It's just a different mindset and horses aren't for everyone.
