The original subject was "Re: bad engine Coil draining battery ??".

I hav checked all fuses for trace bt nothing is changing, ran engine with negative terminal out to check if alternator is gud and it run bt voltage wont go above 10v when m running the engine and keeps dying off...pls. help

Do not run an alternator equipped vehicle with the battery disconnected ever. I am not scolding, I am being very serious. The alternator operates using the battery as a control of the system. the voltage can peak in the area of 100+ volts and ruin every thing in the vehicle attahced to the wiring, and the alternator as well. Take the alternator to the parts store and have them run tests on it. I hope nothing is toast. A bad alternator is likely. They can drain batteries. Jim

As Jim said plus if you got your self between the battery cable and a ground it can/will kill you.
Tract the drain by turning it on and NOT starting it with a test light between the battery and one of the cables. Disconnect things one at a time till the light goes out. Reconnect each thing before disconnecting the next thing.

I was wringing out the wiring on my lawn mower conversion to power unit for my log splitter.

I know you aren't supposed to do it but "I DID". Voltage was 47v for a 12v charging system. Apparently the problem occurs when the unloaded voltage exceeds the Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV) rating of the rectifier diodes at the output of the alternator. A 50 piv rated diode pack would probably be designed for this and 47 is getting mighty close. Higher the PIV higher the cost and you would be surprised at what some mfgrs would do to save as little as a nickel per unit. Seen it happen,
