JD 4230 oil pressure guage

On my JD 4230 when I start the tractor the oil pressure guage always goes to the maximum pressure and stays there, even after useing it for hours. Dos the guage need replaceing or the sending unit ? Tractor doesnt seem to burn oil, but the guage nevr moves.

That needs to be addressed quickly.

Hopefully it's a bad gauge, otherwise it's a stuck relief valve. I've heard, but never actually witnessed it, that the bearings can be "washed out", as in trenches cut from the excess oil pressure.

The other danger is blowing out the oil filter gasket or a galley plug and loosing all the oil. It could even twist off the oil pump shaft or shear a drive key.

Actually just because the oil pressure gauge pegs isn't an indication that anything is wrong although it wouldn't hurt to check oil pressure with a manual gauge.

On my 4450 MFWD I had some monitor issues at various times. I mounted a gauge with a short hose, directly to one of the oil gallery plugs that TX Jim mentions. Left it there after the monitor issue was resolved.

Monitor was the Investigator II system, JD knew it had problems, and the solution is to maintain proper ground on a wire that grounds to the top rear of the engine. I jumpered a soldered wire down to the frame, near the battery. Has"nt bothered since, but if it does I can clean the contact without removing the hood, which is a time-consuming PITA.

"Hopefully it's a bad gauge:

Odds are about 95 to one that it's the SENDER.

Diesel knock/vibration is tough on the block-mounted senders.

Ford Louisville trucks (for example) typically had the sender mounted on the firewall, connected to the port on the engine by a length of hose.

It looks like the oil pressure sending unit is back from the oil filter. Is this correct? The wire looks like it could stand to be cleaned up. If this doesnt work I see they sell these units for around $35.00 and could just replace it when I service the tractor next week.
