heat question

In trying to preserve propane I am also running several milk house type of electric heaters. My question is how long a running time on one of those heaters at 1500 watt 115 volt to save 1 gal of propane figuring 100% efecient? These are in rooms using unvented heaters and one electric heater will not keep heat up to temp by itself, the propane has to come on annyway. Think it would be several hours to equal the one gallon in heat.

A gallon of propane is equivalent to about 28KWH. Your 1500 watt heater would run about 18 hours to use the equivalent of one gallon of propane. You may want to adjust these rough numbers for efficiency.

Leroy,

I asked the nearly same question, but my alternate heat was from lightbulbs.

TomIN is spot on with other sources that I was given.

Duke energy of Ohio has this page that has some great info. Go to the page I've linked to then check their links on:

Also their link:

has some great info on heatpumps in colder climates.
Info on cost etc.

With a high efficiency furnace, $.046 electricity and $1.19 propane are about equal. Go from there!

Not thinking about the cost, just about how much longer the electric heat will keep gas in my tank.
