Propane again..energy value...

All,

I tried to read the responses previous and got lost.

I am apparently numerically challenged.

If propane is $4 per gallon corrected to 60 degrees F, and electric is $0.10 per kwh, which is cheaper to run per hour?

Assume and 80% efficient forced air furnace. I am assuming that leaving the lights on in the house would be cheaper.

To keep on topic, some tractors use LP, and the gasoline energy equivalent is documented.

Thanks in advance,

D.

10 cent per kilowatt electric is about half the cost of btu as $4.00 lp.

Leave all the lights on. And the stove with the door open if it is electric.

Your stove is 100% efficant.

When propane is $3 per gallon it is about equal to electric.
So.....Ummmm......Propane costs more than electric. Something just aint right when it costs less to heat with Propane than electric.
You gotta get a wood stove or pellet stove.

(quoted from post at 21:53:09 01/28/14) If you have incandescent the bulbs will help to heat. Curly bulbs not so much.
Sleeping with all the lights on does not work out so well for most of us.

you want to talk about lights for heat,..AEP built a new office around 1970 that had no heating system, all heat was derived from the lights, but did have air conditioner

Why pick 80% efficiency for a propane furnace? Many are 91% and don't cost much more then the 81"% models.

jdemaris,

Shamefully, I picked 80% because I'm too lazy and cold to go to the basement and read the numbers of my furnace.

I figure I'll put up with a larger electric bill to offset this propane pricing gig. Lighting seems readily at hand and less expensive for the moment.

Out of curiosity I looked at the cost difference between 80% and 95.5% (I didn't see a 91%) on a well know home improvement store's website. The 95.5% efficient furnace cost 44% more to purchase.
In the short term that is a significant difference, but in the long term the high efficient is probably more cost effective.
