Posting outside temps?

I think I asked this before, when you post the temp for your area, are you posting the ambient temp? Or the feels like temp counting the wind chill? I worked with an idiot 10 or so years ago who when anyone said what the temp outside was, say 1* he blow off that it was -19 at his house. One day I said something to another guy that lived on the other guys road and he said it wasent that cold at my house just down the road! Lol, my wife's father is the same way, if we had 8* he had -7 ? How do you post the temp ?

Bet he has a lot higher Summer temps, more rain during a storm, and less rain than others during a draught.. I know a few of his kinfolks, LOL..

Greg,

4 of my engineers are in Omaha working on a project right now. One of them flew in from Phoenix today, that is going to be a shock.

Temperature = temperature.

Wind chill = wind chill.

And then, there"s the "ol "liar"s club" deal of "who goes first. With some folks, if you go first, it will ALWAYS be colder/warmer/wetter/dryer at their place than at your place.

If that gives them happiness and a purpose in life, who are we to deny them their fun???

I post ambient temp. as my Davis weather station says. At the moment -4F. It is showing Windchill -15, with wind at 4-5mph and himidity at 83%. Wind chill is a combination of temp., humidity, and wind. It was -19F this morning, at sunrise. with a wind chill of -23. Humidity was about 60% so the ratio between ambient and windchill was less this morning, than tonight. The baromiter was also down around 29.51, this morning, as compared to 30.07 tonight.

This is like a friend of mine had a dad like that. Some one asked him what his corn made. The dad said he didn't know because Walt Olson, his BS neighbor wasn't done picking yet.

We had -10 this am with no wind chill, they had wind advisories up for us but no wind here! This is what the weather channel app on my phone shows.

Temp. I get mine off our local cable TV system. I wonder about their accuracy sometimes. Right now it says -3 F and wind chill of -26 F. This AM at 5:15 it said 17 F, but the one in my pickup said 9 F on my way to town. All I know is it is COLD.

I'm so sick of this wind chill stuff,as far as I'm concerned it don't mean anything. It just sounds impressive to some people.Ron

When I was a kid growing up it was before they invented wind chill. The temperature was the temperature. You just go out and do what you do and get frost bit. In the summer you lose skin now and then (this was before sunblock too) to sunburn, and in the winter you lose some now and then to frostbite, no big deal. IIRC they came out with wind chill in 1970.

Ambient. And anything below zero is just plain cold don't care if it's -5 or -30 its all the same after zero and that's not uncoman around here.

Just about the way I feel about too!

Temperature is what I get off the thermometer by the door. No idea how accurate it is. Funny how we never hear about wind chill in the summer. I don't see much use in it as a measurement, it all depends on whether you are in a windy or sheltered spot.

I post actual temps recorded by our inside/outside thermometer. However, I know it is greatly affected by sunshine and can be off by 20 degrees if the sun is shining directly on it. My most accurate thermometer is on the outside of the barn(no heat in there or sunshine either) and it's an old fashioned mercury type, not digital or bi-metal. Yes I know it doesn't actually have mercury in it. My computer says it's 10 right now, and that's cold enough to need your shoes on when you walk out to the road to get the mail.

Years ago before windchill, when it used to be cold it was cold...when the wind blew it was dang cold...

I think any outside temperatures posted below 32º should be deleted (go poof) as scam and the poster be banned for life. Those postings causes a deep chill in the bones of old men which causes the heating bill to go up.

However the temperature here is 01º with a wind chill of -12º

I only go by ambient temps. The "wind chill" is what news people use to make things sound like a disaster all the time.

It was 12 below F here in Hawks Michigan all day yesterday. Paper said it was 22 F below with the wind-sissy factor. Right now at 8 AM it is 3 below F and snowing (by Lake Huron).

I've living in Otsego County NY for 40 years. I've seen 25 below F twice. Last time was early 90s. Here in the hills temps vary a lot over just a few miles. Oneonta and Cobleskill are always 5-10 degrees warmer then where I live.

I report weather everyday (when I am Home) on cocorahs.org. Several neighbors have checked their temps with the same gage. And the temps, moisture can change a lot in one mile. Our Town two miles away is normally warmer, but more moisture. Wind Chill is a factor that you can use if you are going to be out in the cold with uncovered skin for a short time. Like running out to the out house. LOL. My weather ident CO is Salida 2.5NM, or CO-CF-33 e-mail is open.

I always post ambient temps. My wife on the other hand really hates cold so when she states a temp it's always the lowest reported wind chill in our area.

I lived in Cobleskill for a few years when younger and it does get very cold there but I also lived in Jefferson, NY for a few years and let me tell you it gets really cold there and by the actual temps not the just to scare you wind temps.

Guys, Here in Usually Sunny South Central Texas, we are current overcast, windy, 45* and on a slow fall to a low tomorrow am of 31* or so... we are completely our of it by Sat am!

The coldest I've "eyeballed" on a thermometer is -42*.The wind was blowing at about(estimated by me) 20MPH out of the North.I have no idea what W/C is or was but it was cold.
Protected from the wind it almost felt warm. There were times when I think it was colder then -42* but I didn't have a thermometer to look at.

There I don't agree with you. Most cars will still start down to 20 below or so but 30 & 40 below will weed out the weak ones. A lot of work is done outdoors at zero in comfort but not at 30 below.

I think what the thermometer reads, shaded not in the sun, is adequate, the chill factor is meaningless because you know if you are in the teens or hovering around zero, its windy, its darned cold no matter what number you put on it. How about the days when you wake up, you get what you get, when you get it kind of weather ? Just make your own call LOL ?
