finding the distributor model # on My 53 super M

Hi guys, long time since I've posted here, but I need your expertise. I have decided to go to an electronic ignition module since for some reason my distributor keeps trashing points. The units listed here tell me to verify distributor model before buying. The only number I find on My dist. is HD3-524684 stamped into the clamp ring base. THis matches none of the numbers listed in the sale literature for the modules. Am I looking in the wrong place for the number or am I missing something? THanks Robyn

Off hand that number tells me nothing. But yes, there are 3 possible distributors that I can think of. IH made distributors are mounted horizontal. Delco Remy is next popular distributor and mount vertical. And I have seen Auto-lite distributors used with some live hydraulic pumps. They mount vertical as well. I can tell them on sight but you might have to hunt by trial and error. You may find the reason yours eats points is simply because you are using the wrong ones.

Robyn - To your original problem, there's only 2 reasons your Super M eats points:

1 - (Not very likely) The condenser is the wrong one, or it has gone bad .

2 - Your tractor was converted to 12 volts, but the original 6 volt coil was retained. It then needs ballast resistor added to the coil primary to knock coil voltage down to 6 volts. Otherwise the points will burn out VERY quickly.

Incidentally cheap, low quality points CAN wear out in a hurry. But even these should be good for a couple hundred hours of operation if everything else in the ignition is correct.

Sorry Bob I should have been more clear. The spring straps have broken twice after a few months operation... Thanks for the reply

My distributor is horizontaly mounted and is mounted to the hydraulic pump that powers the loader and 3-point..

THanks for the replys. THe distributer had been rattle can painted and when the paint ran it obscured the model numbers. power brushed off the paint and the numbers were there and correct. My electronic module is on order... THanks again. THis forum has always been a wealth of information and advice..

Are you sure you dont have a Prestolite dist. No reason to break straps and go thru points that often you need to get things straight as something is very wrong. Where are you getting points that fail like that as they will last for yrs.

You are looking at the right place. Make sure the first letter is not a J or E. That letter stands for the advance curve and total advance. D = April. 3 = 1953. Distributor serial number is the rest. Since the date matches a SM, thinking maybe the first letter was misread.
