Whirlpool Water Heater

Changed out a water heater for a friend today. He gave me the old one, a 4 year old Whirlpool Energy Smart electric water heater. This is a high end heater, 10 year tank warranty.

The problem is in the electronic controls. Looking online, this model has a reputation for the controller to go bad. The solution is argue endlessly with non-English speaking customer service morons, or buy an expensive new controller, neither of which I will do.

My first thought was to convert it to standard mechanical thermostats, but there are no brackets to mount them to the tank.

Anyone ever dealt with one of these?

I have a 52 gal. Whirlpool Energy Smart electric water heater with the life time stainless steel tank and its been in over 8 years. So far we haven't had any problems with it. But with the laundry detergents now days we don't use the hot water like we use to.

Electric water heaters aren't that expensive. You don't say if this one works or not. If it works, put it in and hope for the best. If it doesn't work, dumpster it.

Why did he change out a four year old water heater?

I have many in my rentals for years. Only one controller went bad. You have to call whirlpool to get a new one. They are FREE, except I had to pay shipping like $25.

If you take the sheet metal and insulaton off, then split the tank in half with a cutting torch, you'll have two nice feeding troughs.

we made several of those with 4 pipe legs welded on to make calf feeders, they last many years, make sure to wear goggles or safety glasses when cutting glass lined tanks with a torch

As long as the mechanical thermostat is tight against the tank it should work, and those thermostats are inexpensive. What does it have for elements and where are they?
