Welding M wheel

I have two running cracks about an inch and a half long about six inches apart on the wheel of my M Farmall. The cracks are on the wheel where the two bolts clamp it to the axle. Until I replace the wheel is welding a good idea. I am not a welder but can have one do it. Just wanted y"all"s thoughts. Thanks for any replies.

Dont wast your time/money.There are a 'bazillion' old junked Ms still out there. You could probably buy a wheel for a song.

I agree with DeltaRed, putting time into the partially fractured wheel is not best practice. Getting deep enough into the casting to weld successfully will take a few hours and substantial skill. Replacing the iron is way less expensive.
Unless the cracks are not in the meat of the hub, I would avoid using the tractor. Google images of tractor wheels fall off! Jim

From 41 and a half, through mid production of 450s the axles are the same size. I think (IIRC) that the the wheel style changes to 8 spoke and double Bevel rim on 400 series and newer, so unless you get the whole rim wheel combo it will not work. So the answer is M SM SMTA. I do not know if the earliest 39 and 40 m axles are the same, those tractors had several unique parts. Others should chime in. Jim

Here is something you should KNOW, before welding any rim, NEVER do it with the tire on the rim, even if the bead is separated from the rim, it must be dismounted from the rim.
