JD B and NH 325 Spreader

325 is a 130 bushel single beater PTO drive from the 60's. Think an early styled JD B could handle it in very gently sloping clay-loam? Thanks.

Don't know if you'll have trouble getting the whole shebang going, without live PTO. With a baler, you can clear it out in neutral, then when you start it, you'll have a minimum load on the PTO. Not the same with a spreader- its a steady load.

Any chance you could try it with a load before buying? Maybe spread a load for the seller at his place, with your tractor.

Dont know why not just run the web slow untill you fnd out how fast you want to unload. Sure dont need a live pto thats what low gear is for.

I already have the spreader and my neighbor has the tractor. Thinking about asking to use the tractor if I get it fixed up for him. Just didn't know if it'd be a good fit or not.

I have pulled an overloaded (really heaped up) NH 329 (same size) with a Farmall H. It will work alright if you start the spreader in "N" and work your way up through the apron speeds (I use 2 and 3 the most when unloading on a field). If you have to stop, put the spreader back in "N" (beater running only, no apron) and get going again. If the manure has a lot of matted hay in it you will have problems, but most any other manure will go through fine.

Spread a lot of manure with a JD 50 and 165 bushel spreaders. Never had any problems with a light front end. A 50 is not much more than a high-faluten' B anyway. Spread a lot of manure with 125 bushel spreader with and Oliver 60, too. 19 hp. was enough on level or semi level ground. The front end was a bit light, though.

Ran same outfit 327 new holland with 50 latter a d15 . check web start with small loads that way any breakage you dont have much to pitch off.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't think I'll have any trouble. Now, it's just to get through the 17 other major projects before I could even consider tinkering with an old tractor.

Well, for one thing, we farmed with ground driven manure spreaders and engine driven balers. Dad had one of each, that he pulled with an 8N, and they worked just fine (B & D notwithstanding). PTO driven spreaders didn't come along until after many tractors were live PTO. Did you have a PTO manure spreader back in the '50's, that you used with a non-live PTO tractor? I'll bet not.

Back in the day, it didn't matter.

You hooked-up and had few if any problems (but you KNEW how to slip gears and clutches)..few are that familiar with their equipment, to try it today.

GOOD brakes were mandatory on all tractors and especially on the smaller ones..

Dropping down a long hill with a JD"B" and 2 loaded wagons (Hay OR Grain must have been something to hear..(Straight Pipe exhaust)
The engine over running some and shooting flame out the top..
Then, as you went up the next, the front-end would get into resonance with the power strokes and start dancing up and down..!!
Funny tho, I didn't ever need to drop out of 6th gear on our 7-Hills..

Ron.

One benefit to having a small tractor on a PTO spreader is less gearbox trouble if a heavy chunk goes over the beaters. I spread a lot of manure with a Kelly Ryan 5'X12' spreader behind a SC Case. In most conditions the little Case did fine. Front end bobbled a little but never came up. In mud or deep snow the Case wimped out but I just planned accordingly. I was careful not to pile too much on the beater for easier starting and less of a starting pile on the ground. When I had it behind the JD A I had to have the drawbar short or it'd bend the drawbar. I run a Massey Ferguson 160 with an Allis D14 and it works perfectly. I have run the same spreader with a JD 2130 and I prefer the Allis with less power so that the tractor starts to lug before I break the spreader. With the 2130, it"s easy to break the spreader because of the extra power. The spreader is 160 bushels.
