Three years sure goes quick

I've gotta take that miserable pesticide certification test again next week. I don't know how three years can go by so quick. Seems like I take it every year.
I just finished reading the whole manual again. I don't know why I can't get it to sink in. Seems like I can read something new and retain it,but reading that thing for the who knows how many times,I can read about two words and my mind starts to wander. Next thing you know,I've read a whole paragraph and don't have a clue what any of it said.
Gonna do what some of the other old coots do before long and make the one of the kids take it. If he wants to farm this place some day,he'll have to do it eventually anyway.

How does the price compare for do it yourself materials, fees, PIA paperwork ? verse a custom outfit doing it ?

I see more and more going to custom outfits for planting ,harvesting & spraying it seems.

Yep, I'm a NYS certified nurseymen, it's open book test but every 3 years I have to retake the test, so I go threw books to brush up my memory. Puls I just google what I don't know. I know I fail most of the fert questions, since I don't do lawn treatments I don't care about how many sq feet 23-10-10 will cover if applied at such a rate ect, ect. Lol

I just don't like to wait around for somebody else to do it. I've heard too many horror stories about getting the wrong thing applied, wrong field sprayed and things like too. The Certification is $50 every three years. They have a review session in the morning before the afternoon test, that was always free/walk in. This year it's by appointment and a $20 charge,so I'll have to drop $70 on it.
I suppose I could just try all Roundup Ready, but I've got a fear of resistance on some of this continuous silage corn. It's kind of like a CDL,as long as I have it,I'd just a soon keep it.
You can renew with credits from attending meetings without taking the test over and over but I guess I'm not on the right mailing list because I never know when the meetings that give RUP credits are.

Randy, Why not attend local farm events that have RUP credits, that way you can avoid taking the test every 3 years? If you are attending the Wilbur-Ellis Customer Appreciation event tomorrow, you can start picking up some RUP credits there.

I know what you mean about reading two words and the mind wandering. I have that happen even with the stuff I'm interested in. dad has his right now but I suppose I will have to get the license at some point soon. At least when you get it there will be little worry about it the next three years.

Here in Tx you don't have to re-take the test. You do have to attend classes and have 15 credits to renew every 5 yrs.

I never know when these things are that give RUP credits. Next thing I know, the three years is over with and it's too late to get credits. If somebody wanted to let me know when the eligible meetings are,I'd start collecting them for the next time around.

You can keep up with the MSU Extension newsletters, they post the RUP credited events on their calendar of activites. You can also signup for their e-newsletter, that way you won't have to keep checking the site.

I just saved it to favorites. Maybe I can remember to get enough credits for the next time around. I was just on there a few days ago and sent Heather an email about the review session.

Sir, I have not taken this test, thus don't know this material.
But, on any serious brain effort, I study best in the morning, after a good sleep, breakfast, and morning chores are done while my mind is awake and life is relatively calm, - and before I'm wore out OR wanting to go on to something else. It also helps to schedule the time on my calendar, like an important appointment, thus I can get past the anxiety of needing to study and get my mind ready & focused to do it.
A study partner really helps -- in addition to the pre-test refresher, do you know any other folks that are going to be taking the test and could possibly study with you?
Or, could you get one of your kids to study with you and take the test as well?
I don't know the material, but any important study probably should be at least 2 sessions - -go over it once, ponder on it for a little while, and go over it again.
BEST WISHES!!

Sounds like a good reason to go organic! :)

I still have my commercial license, but it'll expire when it does. I'll NEVER take it again. BTW, Commercial is a lot bigger test and no open book...

Ya,this isn't open book. We can't even take our own calculator. If we need one,it will be provided. That whole calibration thing was where I scored the worst last time. Been leaning hard on brushing up on that this time around.

Just do as others have said and attend the meetings that give you credits toward your certification. They can be a pain in the rear and you do need to give up a day of playing with your stuff to do the meetings but there is no worry about test taking. And you will likely enjoy visiting with other tractor guys while you are there.
I went to an all day meeting yesterday and it wasn't half bad and I got 3 of the 15 credits I will need to recertify in 4 years. Four more meetings and I am done.

What have I learned re certifying, for decades? fIRST TEST WAS ABOUT TEN bucks for five years. Then maybe ten bucks for three years. Now, three years at a time, always increasing in price. Bulk of the test has nothing to do with spraying application....ie, how many quarts, pints, ounces per acre.......mostly enivronmental BS. Just a money maker for the AG colleges that think that they are a viable part of today"s agriculture. And yes, I have a BS degree from U of MN. Just not impressed with the alma mater, and all the bs that has followed in 4 decades
