Stopped in a store the next town up to get me some new suspenders . They sell work and western type clothes and sverything carhart makes along with work boots . The different thing is no cash register , just a drawer with the money in it and all tickets are hand writen .

TGIN,

I grew up near Kent, Ohio. On Water Street in Kent, there was a men's clothing store that only had "work" clothes - no dress-up stuff. It was simply called Fred Bechtel's. It sounds like the store you visited is like Bechtel's old store. Kent has turned into a yuppie college town. No Fred Bechtel's left. I guess change happens.

I bet they have trouble finding cashiers. Youngsters today don't know how to figure change w/o a register to do the math. And don't even dream of them handling tax or a 30% off sale. Heck fast food places can't even find enough people who even know what numbers are so they had to put pictures of the burgers on the keys!

We got a store like that in Gloversville NY. Called Beacon Supply. It's been there forever and also specializes in Carhart, and only work cloths.
In the early 1900's Gloversville was the "leather capital of the world". The population consisted of trappers, loggers and millworkers, and store keepers. BS catered to the working man, and still does.

Same 50 somthing couple in there all the time .They dont have any young help .

Heck even with a register they have trouble.

I went to Popeyes on the way home a while back to pick up a bucket of chicken.
The total was like $11.50 so I set $21.50 on the counter. Young girl picks up the 20 as says take it out of this?? I say no take it out of the total 21.50
The young girl just stood there in a daze cause she could not realize why I would give her so much money when one bill the 20 would cover the entire order.
Even after she punched 21.50 in the register and it told her to give me back 10; I do not think she got the meaning.

Curious:
How competitive are their prices?
How busy are they?
Big box stores nearby or do they have a captive market?

Just wondering if there is any money to be made now-days in a business run that way. Perhaps they are to the point things are paid for and as long as they cover their store rent and like running the store they work. I like the idea but like many folks I'm on a very limited income and about the only way to make ends meet is dealing with the devil--Walmart, Amazon, etc.

Loren,
I teach in Gloversville and have never heard of Beacon Supply. Where is it located? Always looking for good work clothes and like to support local business .

In the little town of Boyne City, Michigan their is a Ford Dealership right down town that will hold perhaps two or maybe three cars in it"s show room and about five in it"s service area. The next Ford product that I buy I am going to go see them. It is so refreshing to go in to a place like that and the owner is the first one to greet you and says "What can I do to help you." Mega dealerships you will never see the owner or know who he is if he was there. The last John Deere tractor that we bought was $225,000.00 and they wouldn"t fill up the fuel tank.

We have a store like that here in Delta.'Davis Clothing Store' Just celebrated 103 years of busness.3rd generation still owns it,4th gen will someday run it.Still use the ORIGINAL brass cash register and hand written tickets, and are still in the original building on main street.

If they're an older couple or long standing business, there probably isn't any store rent. Property tax maybe. If they do the work themselves they can get by. Hired help is what kills a mom and pop business.

One of the local hardware, feed, boot places is one step below that. All the counter help has a billfold. Change is a in a cup on the counter. Everyone knows your name type of place even if you only go in a couple times a year. Paper tickets, hand figured tax on the taxable stuff. The owner must have serious faith in his employees.

Place called Moonshine Il.pop.2 order what you want go get your chips and drink when done you go to register and tell them what you had people come from all over the world to eat there. just an old store with outhouse grill closes at 12
;30

The hardware in the small community near me is very much like that. He generally figures the total on a piece of paper, and then opens the register. It's one of those old stores with a ladder on the wall to reach the high shelves.
Poor guy is suffering from big stores like Lowes builders supply, etc. Last time I was in there, the big lazy Susan type nail bin was empty. No nails. Some of the paint shelves were empty. I guess their time is about over, but I sure hate to see them go.

There stuff is as good a price as anywhere . They have every color and style of carhart , I bet they have 3-400 pair of coveralls plus sweatshirts , shirts , jackets , coats and bluejeans and cowboy hats , cant remember it all , I bought carhart suspenders . There is a Tractor Supply in town and there price is higher and not near the selection . Tractor Supply does have alot more dumb looks , over at Wells they can put there finger on anything in the store .
