ROCKY MOUNT, Mo. — A Morgan County man died when the farm tractor he was driving slid backward down a hill and overturned.

Missouri State Highway Patrol says 87-year-old Ernest Gibbs, of Rocky Mount, was thrown from the tractor Thursday and died at the scene.

Gosh, real sorry to hear that.

My 4520 is setting in a gulley from last Monday when I was back blading and moving snow with the loader into the off to the side gulley and got too close to the down slope. No chains this year. It's an odd feeling when the tractor starts going, and brakes do nothing. Well, its raining and its still out there tonight. Hopefully tomorrow the slippery snow on the frozen ground will be gone enough to fetch it back into the barn.

My real point is, that in your post it said that the tractor slid backwards down a hill before it overturned. Mine was forward and it wasn't that bad. Its an odd feeling when she goes with 90% on the fronts and backs like 7+ tons on ice skates and there aint a thing that you can do to stop it. I'm sure glad most of my land is flat with little slope.

Yep snow covers hills and now the thaw and yes things get slick. That is not all that far from me as in the north side of the Lake of the Ozarks and I get up that way from time to time

So sad when someone dies like that.

You should try it on a 70ton tank. When they loose traction on a snow or ice cover hill all they are a giant toboggan. They train the Tank Commander and loader to drop inside the turret and hang on when that happens. Kinda a hairy experience.

Prayers for the family. You just never know when.

Mark, the neighbor has his 4x4 New Holland loader tractor
setting in the ditch, nose first. Been there for several days.
He was moving snow and got it in a little too deep apparently.
His is at least right side up and can be retrieved, like yours. :)
It caught my eye because he has a backhoe on the rear.
I think I would have tried to pull myself out with the backhoe.

Sad to hear, prayers for the family.

Reminds me of an incident that happened on a dairy I did work for back in the '80s. They had an IHC tractor they used to pulled a feed trailer. The owners elderly uncle drove the tractor daily. When the weather was dry he could take a short cut across a deep ravine to get to the back pastures.

One day he was driving up out of the ravine. The tractor had developed a hydraulic leak, and about half way up the pump caught air, and down it came! No drive, no steering, no brakes...

The old man jumped or fell off, went between the tractor and the jackknifed trailer. The tractor was tipped over, leaning against the trailer. He miraculously landed in a tiny protected area, uninjured except for the fall.

Pretty sure that was the end of his tractor driving days though.

An 89 year old farmer was killed just a few days after Christmas over here iin Northern Ireland when he overturned his New Holland tractor into a roadside ditch. The tractor had a safety cab. We had a slight frost after rain and he hit a patch of black ice....I don't know any other details.
Be careful out there!.....Sam

Sorry to hear that its lucky it doesnt happen more often. right next to me there is a road that t's into a main highway .coming up to the stop sign you are going down hill a kid pulling a load of beans with a 105 white decided to downshift going down to the stop sign unfortunatly the overunder freewheels in low. when he realised his mistake he tried shifting back but killed the motor. he rode it down over the hwy by the grace of god swung far enough over to go through a gate into a pasture he finnally bailed (landed on the only rock pile of the trip) and the tractor nosed into the creek snapping the front end. also because of the beans going into the creek the dnr got involeved. simply put an untrained driver so not only be carefull but teach.
