O/T, Chevy 2500 mid 2000's frame breaking

We changed a front brake line the other day on a 2005 when plowing snow. Found a crack in the frame right behind where the A-arm mounts. Started looking at others, found 3 others cracked or broken in same spot in years from 2004 to 2007. All plow snow and have since brand new. If you do this with your truck, take a good look. My 2001 and 2002 have an extra gusset right there and have not broken. Starting with 2008 they look different I think and are fine. All the trucks I have from the 90's that plow snow are fine. Maybe everyone knows about this problem but if you don't just wanted to pass it along. Found more people with problems when I looked on the internet. Great. We are in the process of fixing them right now.

Make sure you check around the motor mount and axle mount as well. The guy I plow with had cracks all over the front frame rails. They had to do a lot of welding on it. It's a 2005 3500 with independent front suspension. 4x4. Good luck with your's.

I remember reading something about the gusset on plowsite.com Just looked it up, and your statement about the 01 and 02 having a gusset appears to be true. Why they would take it out is beyond me. Couldn't have cost more than $1.00 per truck to have the gusset. I saw a 99 GMT400 that had a cracked frame behind the a-arm where the frame drops down below the cab. When you look at the 2 frames, the GMT800 looks much heavier than the GMT400, but without the gusset, that isn't the case I guess.

These pickup trucks are not factory build with a snowplow in mind.
Some can handle it,..some don't.
For the same reason many tractors with aftermarket front end loaders break spindles and front axels.

I had the frame break on a 60 Oldsmobile where the steering gearbox bolted to the frame. The bolts to the gearbox then broke and I had no steering. I was only going about 20 mph and did not crash. Upon further inspection, some non welding a$$hole had tried to fix it before. Ellis

I was surprised to see this on here. My buddy just got done welding his up. His is older though, I think a 2000.

Light duty, heavy duty, gas, diesel? Factory snowplow prep package?

Even with the plow prep package, in the hands of the wrong driver nothing is bullet proof. Watching a few around my area, its a wonder their trucks last as long as they do.

Heavy 3/4 tons. All have snow plow prep. The older trucks are all fine, this certain run of trucks is the problem. Of course they all have plowed snow every year since brand new. All the trucks plowed for 30-40 hours this week for instance, not an easy life for sure.

Considering that the trucks up into 07 had the same front control arms and torsion bars, regardless if it was 1/2 ton V6 or 1 ton big-block, it doesn't surprise me.

Oh, and counting the number of front wheel bearings I've seen go out of them, too. 3 under a pair of Duramaxes, and on under a V6 (at under 45,000 miles).

Thanks, was wondering what your setup was.

I plowed with a 1988 3500, 454. Rebuilt the trans at 60K, rebuilt the engine at 80K. I smacked some stuff pretty darn hard. On accident of course. Did a lot of little welding here are there, but never on the frame. A few stress cracks around the plow mounts on the frame and a the trans cross member. Catching the lip of a manhole cover or drain will really give you a jarring. Had to put a new hitch on it at 90K cause the salt spreader would fling salt up under the back and on the frame rails too.

In the summer it had a 10K lb trailer on it all the time. One heck of a beast, it got used HARD its whole life. Was sad to see it go, but it mostly worn out.
