Learn from the old tractor designers...

Todays auto engineers could learn a thing or two from 75 year old tractor technology. How about a coolant drain that you can actually access and that really drains the whole system ! What about easy to change spark plugs and filters. More uniform bolt head sizes please! And I wish they would end their love affair with Loc-Tite soon. Thoughts ?

How about getting rid of the plastic parts that fail like they are on a timer! Thirteen year old truck I'm afraid to take out of town, what's going to split, crack, crumble next?

rustyfarmall,

I'd prefer that as well. I do not need a motor to drive the heater, defrost,ac dampers. A cable woks right fine.

Also, could Ram trucks please get the computer to respond faster? Try to double beep the horn, there's an annoying delay from pressing the horn and actually hearing it. Same with the accelerator, especially noticeable on a stick shift truck

D.

I'd be happy with a cable or rod driving things that go to the motor. This drive by wire business is sure annoying. It's odd because I don't feel the same annoying things with the electronic 466 or other diesels. Not sure why car and pickup folks couldn't get it right.

Lock-tite is your buddy, whether you realize it or not. Just gotta get the right color. For fasteners that need to be removed on a timely basis, Blue is the color. For something that is to stay forever, Red is the color. Other colors have other uses.

Locktite actually helps to eliminate corrosion between a fastener and a casting, and acts as a lube as the fastener is secured besides helping to prevent fasteners from working loose due to vibration.

Don't knock it.

I do knock it Mark, I deal with it every day. My point is, it is NOT necessary on every dang fastener in the whole car ! Well I am exagerating of course, but it IS annoying that a 6mm bolt will have red Loc-Tite on it, and how are we supposed to remove it without breakage? Usually in a non-heatable spot too .

I agree on the heater controls. My 03 Ford pickup is almost the last one you can turn on the lights and the heater without looking. We have 4 tractors with cabs and radios. All of them suck. You have to stop to change the station, or even turn the volume.

i agree super-h the whole prob is they dont want the avg. guy to be able to change a battery or oil let a lone work on the damn things they want it all done in a dealership more$$$ for the greedy bastards

Disregard the URL link, I have no idea where it came from. I sometimes have a problem with my fat fingers vs. small keys.

Actually most of these complaints should be aimed at the EPA and their fleet average rules. To meet the rules cars had to loose weight and get smaller. The engineers worked long and hard to make these cars get past the EPA rules.

What chaps me is Mercury outboards use nothing but red rather than blue in their engines. It's called out in the service manual. Red requires heat to get it to soften enough for removal. You can't always use heat due to adjacent sensitive components.

Mighty stupid if you ask me. If the designers at Brunswick don't realize that the engines will be maintained and the fasteners will sooner or later be removed they need to get in the unemployment line.

Todays engineers aren't stupid..a lot of the stupid stuff is intentional...take the machine to a mechanic if its too hard for you to take out some fasteners...access some problems...try fixing it with the wrong tool..end up going to a mechanic..planned obsolescence..been going on for years..rank and file engineers don't do this without being told to by their superiors who are being told by the company to do so..

Marketing people tell the engineers they want the fancy dash..the fairings...the computers..the colors..Because that is apparently what the consumer wants..
