89 Chevy Pu Transmission OT

So i had all gm pickups for our gardening landscaping business which we closed late last year. Have an 89 Heavy half extended cab long box with 125,000 miles with auto Transmission/ Just put some money in the motor last year and shortly after lost all reverse motion or movement in the PU. Put in drive or low and moves perfectly but shift to reverse, nothing. Did we lose reverse or might I have linkage or shift module issues? I will admit to not being very mechanical when it comes to electrical and Motor OH, but I am curious if I am missing something small that will not let the transmission activate in reverse. Any and all ideas are welcome. PS this is in NW Wa state so no freezing issues and this happened during warm weather. Thanks

As long as you have park and neutral then its probably not in the shift linkage, you probably still feel the detent for reverse too right? Reverse gear is all hydraulically controlled so the problem is internal.

Have you had it up to highway speed? You'll probably find you lost high gear also.

My '01 did that, center spline stripped in the high gear clutch pack. Be sure to request the rebuilder to install the heavy duty version, better splines, one extra clutch plate.

The "reaction shell" is a common part to break in the 700R4s/4L60s. When it goes you lose reverse, 2nd and 4th. 1st will still work fine.

Regardless of what's wrong - you're likely in for a tear-down and many, many updates if you want to make all efforts to make a "best" repair. HD shell, new 3-4 clutch pack, new sprag, oversize servo, kevlar brake-band, 5 planet pinions from a 4L65, modular seals instead of rubber rings, etc. I just got done doing my own in two rigs. A 1986 and a 1992. I had to buy two special tools that cost me $50 in total.

I have a 76 chevy pickup, 77000 and on 3rd transmission. reverse goes out in it as I didn't drive it enough and seals would dry out. Reverse is in the top, back so almost everything has to come out to get to it.
