I had a nice chat and tractor/farm/ranch discussion with Lazy WP, Nick and his wife were kind enough to visit a while in town. What a treat. Thanks to him and His wife for taking the time. I learned a great deal about the area, and swapped stories. Jim

Sounds like you and Prescott are haveing a great time traveling the country!I know we sure enjoyed our visit!Enjoy our great countrysides,Drive safe!!!

We are. The US of A is incredible in the winter. Between snow covered peaks, and the tree free prairie, we are having a great trip. Thanks. Jim/Prescott.

I don't know which way you go from there, but if you go east hwy 12 is the more scenic. However hwy 20 is a wider road with a faster speed limit. O'Neill NE is a nice little town also, kind of like Valentine. Stay warm.

We spent 4 days in Valentine last spring... visited the National Wildlife refuges and enjoyed many birds, buffalo, elk and antelope. However the Nebraska National Forest was a joke, hardly found a tree!!! Beautiful open space out there on the prairie, nothing like here in Virginia. We checked the menu at the Peppermill, but could not afford it.

Now be nice about the forest. There were no trees out there originally. All man planted, until the Eastern Red Cedars took off. Here on our place, which is just on the north side of the Forest, we have more trees then south of us.

It was great to visit with you Jim. To bad I had to get home to do chores. As I said before, there are lots of steak houses in Valentine. Kind of pricey, but well worth it.

I went west to Murdo then south to Valentine (ate at McDonalds!) and west on 20 on my way to Bridgeport, I enjoyed it very much, the sand hills are neat to see and then at Alliance it looked just like home with roads every mile ect.

From reading your earlier post to Allan about going through Cheyenne on I-80 etc, it sounds like you probably took highway 83 north from North Platte to get to Valentine.

If so, you drove right past/through our ranch(we own land on both sides of the highway) about 35 miles south of town, halfway between Valentine and Thedford. If you happened to notice a center-pivot on the west side of the road with a building site a mile or so on northwest up the valley, that's us.

People always comment on how that "60-mile stretch of nothing" is the most desolate boring drive they have ever been on...we just smile and tell them that's just the way we like it!

I've been fishing on the Snake River near Valentine; beautiful clear water. The canyon it cut has all the characteristics of mountainous country. Climb out, and you're in wide open prairie.

Very nice property. We sure did see it. The few people in the area don't bother me (refreshing after living in 150,000). It is rusty brown, but I like the Mogul effect of the sand hills... Jim

My dad and I attempted to camp at the city park there in 1983. We were headed to Lynch Wyoming to go hunting. We had just got our ole coleman campstove out and started supper, when the dangest schwarm of moskiters attacked us!! It was awful. We swatted, and cussed, and drug what we could inside the little camper shell we had on the truck. We couldn't really do anything or fix any supper, so we sat hunched over in the camper and ate canned peaches. Since we were about out of options, we unrolled our sleeping bags and went to bed, it was barely dark. This would have been in late September.

Good memories now though.
