traveling for rented ground

How far do some of you guys travel for rented ground from your home base? Im at ten miles now! I know were thiers alot of ground about fifty miles away from me seems along ways to travel and make a profit! But maybe im wrong! Whats your thoughts!

In our area, farmers were traveling up to 15 miles since the late sixties. Today, most of my neighbors travel up to 30 miles or more. BTOs are covering 3-4 counties. The biggest are farming in multiple states. Modern tractors and combines travel 25-30 mph. Its really not a big deal to run "up north" or "out west" for a day or three before returning machinery to the main yard.
What's an hour or two out of a day for travel if you can add 5 or 600 acres to the operation?
Heck, we run 30 miles just for groceries or a ball game and don't give it a second thought.

Did you not just ask this question? In any event the big question is why are the locals not able to get it? It usually means any profit is disproportionate to the rental rate (to the landlord's favor) or the landlord is very difficult and/ or not trustworthy.
Does the ground in question have a yield history that you can work a budget or is it totally off the say so of somebody you do not know? Other than the past few years historically the cost of travel eats up the potential profit. Now you have heard my rant.
If you still want to check it out then try to obtain accurate yield data if available and work a budget. Allow for fuel plus tires for the travel plus the extra time if you are paying for hired help. The neighbors there may not appreciate an outsider so allow for some vandalism too.

10 is nothing, but 50 is quite a lot. Would probably still be worth it if it was couple hundred, PRODUCTIVE, acres. The drive with equipment seems long at first, but after couple seasons it's no big deal. At 50 miles I think you'd have to try to plan so you can go there, do it, and come back.

We drive 11 miles to get from one pasture to another, that we can see a mile away. You drive forever to go nowhere around here, so miles between fields is a subjective thing. We run ground that's 12-13 miles away but takes 20 miles to get there.
