Jay in NY's post about the frozen squash reminded me of a night when I was living up in Anchorage in the mid 80s.
I had an old cabover camper that I had parked on the back of an old truck and lived in that for 2 1/2 years in a trailer park there.
It had a propane furnace and fridge which both worked very well. I kept it heated with a 100 lb propane tank and a 20 lb as a spare.
To back that up I had an electric milkhouse heater which I never used but it was there if I ran out of propane in the middle of the night.
So one night it was about 30° below. About 1:00 AM I woke up because it was getting cold in the camper.
Furnace was out.
So I dressed and went to change over to the 20 lb tank.
Arrg, it was gone.
So I went back in and went to turn on the electric heater.
HUH? It was gone too!
So I dressed up in my Carharts, crawled into a big sleeping bag and covered that up with blankets.
Slept like a baby but boy was it tough to crawl out in the morning.
Later that day I ran into my land lord and I asked him WTH happened to my tank and electric heater.
He said, very casually, "Oh. I took them to try to thaw out the waterlines to one of the trailer houses."
I told him how my furnace went out and the cold ordeal I went through.
He said nothing.
So I told him that everything in the camper had frozen solid and all may cabbage and potatos were ruined and I was pretty mad about it.
He just kind of chuckled and said;
"Well if you were a True Alaskan you would have known to bring your potatos and cabbage to bed with you and they wouldn't have frozen."
And that was the end of it.
