Questionable CraigList Ad??

I contacted a seller about a used rock rake he advertised with a local phone number.
I wasn't interested in the rake but saw a back hoe bucket setting beside the rake, along with other implements.
He stated he would have to check-didn't remember having one, and would call me back ?????
Since he hasn't called back, that makes it questionable to me.
Sounds like he posted a stolen photo and plans to SCAM someone.
That's why we have to be so careful when dealing with strangers!

I've had good and bad experiences with Craigs list.

Never been scammed, but sure had a lot of no responders, show up and nobody home, etc.

But then I've got some great deals and met some upstanding people.

Just have to be very careful, it's not regulated or monitored as far as I know.

If I was going to pull a scam, I'd sure use something flashier and more expensive than a rake!

Half the posters on Craigslist seem to be functionally illiterate or otherwise "developmentally disabled". And about five percent are obviously crooks. The rest are normal folks like you and me: Disorganized, maybe a tad bit greedy but basically honest.

Had a similar situation with a tractor I had listed to part out. Person called about Mack trucks in the background of picture. One was a spare ready to go and the other had a broken motor mount. Caught me off guard and told Him that I would sell them. Put a price on them both I thought would discourage him. He looked at them and the only thing he asked is would we wait there till he could get his boss to bring a check. You never know.

I check CL several times during the day. Some of the best buys I have ever encountered were bought off CL, but the best legitimate items usually sell first day or within a few hours.
You have to be FAST but[b:680632560c] CAREFUL!![/b:680632560c]

(quoted from post at 22:42:21 01/06/14) Maybe he thought YOU were trying to scam HIM, so didn't bother to get back to you.
Well---that's probably what it was!!

Typically, what happens in the craig's list scam, is a nigerian
scammer steals a photo of a legitimate ad, and re-posts it as his.
sometimes you can see differences in the quality of the script, vs
the rest of the ad, sometimes you have to print the ad to find the
false script, behind the blank spaces in the ad. THe one sure come
on is a price that is too good to be true. Always be wary.

I blow off people asking about things other than what I am selling as well, expecially if they are asking ahead of time about something in my pictures. Reason being is simple, Im selling X, not X, Y and Z. If people are insisting on wasting my time, before I have even meet them in person, then Im pretty sure they will waste my time when (or if) they do ever stop to see what I am selling. Another problem I have had is people look at what I am selling and see my "nicer" item and in their mind, down grade what I am selling and sometimes decide they want to buy my nicer item. Example: selling an older lawn mower you want the newer one out of sight or a buyer may feel you are asking too much for your older one or even talk themselves out of the older one when they see your new one. Its very strange but it has happened to me several times and my stuff was priced right, the "not for sale" item was just a distraction.

Now I do things different, people have to be interested in X or I move on to the next buyer (I usually have a number of those so I get to pick my buyer).

UPDATE---Well, I suspected WRONG!!
Guy called back and said items belonged to his dad and he asked him to list rock rake.
He contacted his dad and said the bucket was for sale but he didn't know the brand or size.
He said he would call tomorrow with additional information.
Really surprised that I have bought from his dad before.
Guess you never know but you still have to be cautious.
