Will she be ok in <175 bu corn? Has 3rd lift cylinder. Going to shop for a corn head for it, was going to go with a 6, but being i have an 8 row planter, buddy says get an 8, it will handle it fine. Thoughts? Looking for heads starting now because I am not waiting until 2 weeks before harvest.

If you want to run a normal speed and put grain in the tank get a 6 row and you will be a whole lot happier. The 1460 does not have the capacity at the cleaning area to handle that kind of yields.

I have a 1660, CDC 8.3 engine, inclined auger in grain tank. I was told (I have no personal experience with this) that this model has heavier finals/axle/something over the earlier 1660? I have a 1063 head w/poly snouts, and a bin extension. No troubles so far.
I suppose if you drove slowly enough, and had someone right there with a buggy, you could get by, but my bigger concern would be too much weight on that chassis.

Most guys want to 'cut' the same # of rows that they plant. That is so they dont have to fight 'guessrows'.Do a good job planting the guess row thing wont matter. For years I planted 4 rows,,cut 3 rows. Then I went to planting 6 row.Worked good, then I followed the planter. The next year I bought a 4 row machine and am still planting 6.Unless your guess rows are really horrible/crooked,it wont matter if the planter and combine dont 'match'.

Thanks guys. 6 row it will be then. I do plant straight as I can. Adding a GPS for littler and fert applications so may as well use it if it helps with planting, other wise I will do it the way the ol times taught me decades ago.

Re: GPS....have you looked at the Outback S-Lite? Light bar system for $750. Not an auto steer- just a guide to follow. I bought one recently, will be fun to try out. google it for info.....

Before we got the 1680 we ran a 863 on a 1460 with no problems. We were careful with it and our ground is table top flat.

I worked for an old guy here back in 75,shelled 1000 acres of corn for him with one of his combines. He dropped back from an 8 row planter to a 6. Said that the time it took to get the 8 row in to transport and back in to field position,he could take the 6 down the road and plant the difference.
