changing jd 7000 38 to 30

Have a chance to pick up a JD 7000 planter with less than 4 years use (<100/yr) EVER on it from a older relative, has been shedded since retirement. No fertilizer. How hard would it be to make to 30" rows, and way out there, make into a 3pt unit? Would be nice to using for replant rather than my 8, and would also be used for sweet corn and wildlife plots.

Hi Dave,

Yes it can be done with some effort. Wife's cousin narrowed up his 7000 this last spring and says it works really good after his modifications. He lives 10 miles east of me, and if you wanted more information from him, I can ask him what form of contact works best for him and pass that information on to you. His is still pull type, but narrowed from 38" down to 30".

Well it depends on which JD 7000 planter it is. If it is the common "regular" planter then you will have to modify the wheel lift rock shaft. The wheel arms are not adjustable. So you can't slide the planting units in to 30" from 38" because the tires are in the way.

IF it is a JD 7000 CONSERVATION planter then it had the wheel lift modules that are bolted to the main frame. These you can just unbolt and slide everything around. You may have to shorted the marker slide tube as it will not go in far enough for narrow rows.

I would bet that it is a JD regular 7000. They are 80% of the total production in wide rows.

As for making it a three point planter. You can do it but you have to make/buy the planter drive wheel assemblies. JD 7000/7200/1750 planter do not drive off the planter unit. The drive off of the lift/depth control wheels.

The three point planter of that vintage is a JD 7100.

How you doing over there in this weather Mnut? Our furnace has been out since march, chalk it up to terrible furnace repair company. Gonna put a new one in next spring with a central air system so e are heating 100% with wood. Have to say, the warmth in the house is more even throughout the house and the electric bill is much lower. Will be cutting wood in february though. Just did not have time to get'r done this fall so running low.

Had my 7000 narrowed down to a 32 and it works OK. I have been using a 443 corn head and does a good job. My newer combine has wide tires and I am glad for the extra spacing between the rows. Amost wish the rows were a bit wider.

Oh, not too bad. Just trying to stay warm too. We had 20 cord of wood in the yard for my outdoor wood stove and my parents outdoor wood stove, and I'm thinking we'll be out in February too. My neighbor came in with his shear and cut 15 more cords of trees down last week. I'd like to see the snow settle some so it will be easier to get the wood pulled together and worked up. Went out there yesterday with the snowmobile and the snow was well over me knees on the level. Cows are going through they hay like crazy in this cold weather. Other than that, same old thing. I've been meaning to shoot you an email updating you, I just have to take the time and do it. I will soon. Hope all is well with you.

I presume it is the common 4 row 7000?

Everything is pretty easy other than the rock shaft is too wide, the wheels get in the way. Folks cut the ears off and move them in a bit on the top pipe. Just takes good welding skills. Fr that nice a machine it would be worth it.

I would not make it into a 3pt, I would sell it and buy a real 7100. No point in reinventing everything, the brackets, drive wheel, etc.

If the row units have such little use, maybe find the frame you want, and transfer the units. Check with Haukos Bros. in Glencoe- they salvage and rebuild 7000s.

Can be done.I had a neighbor about 3 miles from me that retired from farming and had his equiptment left and when he passed his sister wanted me to help get everything sold.He had a JD 7000 4rw with fertilizer in excellent shape and we had at least 10/15 calls and it brought more than you could buy a nice 8row narrow for.
