Shop vac for cleanning combine used in emergency

When my old shop vac gave up the ghost I broke down and bought a new one. I haven't used it on my tractor or combine yet but it sure was handy at 4am today.
I heard a loud bang that caused me to get up and check the place. Saw nothing wrong except the water pressure was very low. Opened the basement door and heard the sound of runing water.
I quickly turned the water off and started checking for the leak. Well, as others have posted here before as happening to them. it was the hose connected to the washing maching.
It seems that the cheap fittings had blown apart and caused the flood.
My shop vac [really bought for my shop but still in the house] saved the day. My wife and I quickly vacuumed up over 20 gallons of water from the floor.
As the previous poster advised, check those hoses often and relace them every year because they are made very cheap. Use the best ones you can find.

There are braided, stainless steel hoses available. A little more expensive, and the fittings are a little better.

They reccomend you change those hoses every 5 years. My wife bought some replacements. Then 'hounded' me till it got done...

Also do not forget to make sure you have a copper like on your ice maker on the fridge. This also will make a nice flood if it should break and you are not home. Most come with plastic but a good copper line will sometimes save the day.

Yes on the SS braided ones. That is all I will use on a toilet or sink. We do have rubber on the washer, but is RIGHT next to the sump pump....I will look into the SS ones for the washer.

install a single lever laundry valve. Learn to use it EVERY time and you'll save yourself a bunch of headaches.

Geeeeeez! What kind of pressure are you guys running? We are only on our 2nd washing machine, after 40 years. Bought the second one late 2006. I kept the hoses off the original in the shop/barn and use them occasionally !

I bought a set of those braided hoses about 4 yrs ago. They have some sort of valve built it which shuts off the water if a hose does break. Called Flood safe.

I agree Ron - we have a valve just like that, and the wife turns it off when she's done with the washer. Good habit!
