Hi all it's Bryce. My buddy up the road is looking at buying a Ford 4000. Here is the add for it, is there anything that you guys think that we should look out for, and what do you think of the tractor? I would just like to help the guy get himself a good deal. Have a look and tell me what you think! Thanks in advance. Bryce
Ford 4000 Tractor

Seems a bit high for the earlier model 4000 but if the guy really did all that to it, it might be worth it. Can't go too far wrong with the Ford 1,000 series tractors. The later, all blue, 3 cylinder models are more desirable however.

Yep, I agree. This farm has a bunch of the "late" tractors:
3400I
3550I BackHoe/Loader
5000
8000
However, they also have one of these early 4000's, it has a diesel engine, and a SOS tranny, so they have been looking for a replacement tranny, and I suggested that they just bought this one because of it's condition, and kept the other one for parts. OR they could take the engine out of the one that they have and stick it in this new one and have a diesel and then sell the running engine in the one that is for sale. MY GOSH!!! SO MANY OPTIONS!!! :p Bryce

Around here that kind of money would get you 15 years newer. Maybe not the new paint. Plus you would get into the 3 cylinder engine.

I am always leery of a fresh paint job (a.k.a. Liquid Overhaul) do you really know what issues are hiding under that new paint?

On the plus side, seems 1000 series Fords are everywhere. Parts should be no problem.

It is a 50 year old tractor with no power steering, has had a loader on it at one time (how's the clutch). Looks like a gas engine.

Well, it looks decent enough. 4200 is on the high end for that tractor, but is within reason. What transmission? I'm guessing it's a five speed without live PTO. Depending on your buddy's needs, live PTO may or may not be a requirement.

Make sure the brakes are in good shape. Look for signs of oil leaking out the rear axle seals, that indicates the rear wheel bearings need replacement. Make sure the PTO works and if it's live that the clutch doesn't slip.

That is a high price for a GAS old series 4000 without power steering. You can find newer with power steering for about the same money just without the FRESH paint.

That tractor is really just a newer Ford 800 series. They are a fine three point tractor for the era they are from but you can find more tractor for the same money.

All 5-speeds in the '62-'64 models have live PTO. What little I can see of the shifter in the 2nd picture suggests a 4-speed...which does NOT have live PTO.
Personally, I'd keep looking, unless it can be had for at least $600-700 less than the asking price. Especially if it's a 4-speed.

What transmission?

Sounds high, especially if a four speed (no live PTO).

Not a fan of recent paint jobs.

Offer $3,500 or $3,000 if a four speed.

The $4200 is the asking price. If you took it home for $3700-$3800 you are doing pretty well - especially if it has live PTO. I still see 8Ns painted up like that selling for $3000 and that is a lot more tractor.

Like Dan said, The ad says "asking" so you should be able to get it down to $3700 or so. BUT, take your vacuum and compression gauges with you and check the motor internally, and don't get into a bidding war against someone who needs shiny paint.

Its got $1000 in tires. If the motor is in good shape the price is fair.

Yes you can buy newer with slick worn out tires, and just as worn out.

Or you can buy newer and look long and hard to find a cream puff..

Either way for the shape, the price is okay if it checks out. new clutch and throwout, new tires, new charging system, converted to 12 volts, cleaned and painted.

Now days, a full tank of gas can add to the price.
