Scrap yard low prices

Doing some paperwork, found my scale ticket and stub for a
load this spring - it was mix of heavy iron, sheet metal, some
alloy wheels with no tires and two large cat convertors. I had to
sort it at the yard for them ie drive to the different piles. The
aluminium was not scaled separate from the steel.

960 lbs total. My payout was 58.40$. What a waste of time, cost
me 45$ in fuel to drive it to town + wasted time.

Asked about 2 cars I had, they said 25$ for small cars if I bring it
there, 50$ for large cars. Not allowed to remove alts/starters,
you can take the tires.

the two cat converters should've brought that by themselves. 60 lbs. of Aluminum would've been $30.

i know a guy that gets $80-100 apiece for catalytic converters depending what they came off of. Cars about 3-4 hundred.

I guess you should have asked first.I just sold a car and it brought $311 and the unprepared steel was $180 per ton.It was higher but has dropped.

I think that the guys that do it regularly call around first and segregate loads before they go.

Scrap cars, listed in "The Country Today" paper
are $160 at Eau Claire Wisconsin.
I don't know if that's per ton, or per car.
A Lacrosse Wisconsin offered us $130 for a 1993
Mercury Sable.

10$ each for cats, one was a 2009 honda civic, minor crack in the manifold. Should have brazed it and sold the manifold/cat.

They did mention I can buy scrap steel out of the piles I was sorting into at 0.60$/lb or new steel at 0.90$/lb. Unbelievable.

sold a 2000 CMC 3500 cargo Van early Dec
drove it across the scales
$680, 270ish a ton
Columbus Ohio
somebody is ripping you off

I was just going to ask you what new steel cost. 'Here' I can get new steel for $0.70/lb, so that yard is ripping you off in a big way. I'm really sick of this price differential in Canada. Scrap is around 155-170 here. Logic dictates that if I pay more for EVERY item imaginable, I should get more for something when I sell it. Not so here. I pay more for everything, and receive up to $100/ton less for scrap. There's a price to be paid for 'free' health care I suppose.

Took a '56 plymouth today, no engine and had been sitting rusting into the ground for 50 years. $11/hundred. It brought $240. Took $25 in fuel and 2 hours of my time total.
