Might be making a trip to Florida

My wife's nephew just got home from training in the Navy and camde to see me today. I'm the only one he knows with a truck big enough to pull a car hauler, to load up his fire bird w/ blown engine and get it home.

Asked if I'd let him and his gf's step dad take it. I shot that down really quick, but I said if he paid the gas I'd offer to drive w/him down there myself, get a Uhaul car hauler down there, and drive back. I've got a few things to check over yet on my truck, but I don't have any doubts it'll get us there & back. Probably won't have any time to stop near anyone as it'll be a weekend run, but if I do I'll try to holler.

Looks like we'll be doing it probably in a month or 2, depending on how my schedual works out.

Since you are starting and ending in the same place you should check out a local rental price.
For trailers (unless there is a major shortage in your area and they need equipment moved in) it usually cost about half to rent local; tow it to where you are going; load it and tow it back; over renting one way.

Trucks usually do not pencil out because they charge you by the mile but trailers are flat day rate.

I can't even recall where he was for basic. Any ideas where that is? I'm trying to get an idea where we'd even be heading and how long it's gonna take. He said 16 hours, but that's probably lead footing it. Driving my truck is probably gonna take a bit longer.

It's all gotta get looked in to yet. I work with a guy who's got a house down in Florida and said it's cheaper to rent a uhaul down in Florida and bring it up here than to go round trip.

I'm assuming the trailers have surge brakes? I don't have my truck wired up yet for a brake controller and wasn't planning to do it yet. I do have good brakes on my truck and I've hauled loads 180 bales of hay 75 miles with some stop & go without issue, and that was before I fixed them up a little.

Where is the car with bad engine now? Where are you? Where does this Swabee want to take it? Do you have a car trailer, or access to one?
Can you drop by Boston and get my 1968 big wedge Barracuda I bought new from my nephew?

Well, looks like we'd be going that route then. He didn't do too steller of a job communicating when he was down there, but now that you mention it, it was for schooling down there. Something with electronics etc...

I'm thinking either Orlando or Jacksonville, but I could be wrong. I've gotta do some more digging and talking with him on how he wants to do it. The plan wiould be to burn down there, sleep, get loaded up and turn & burn back home. Not willing to use up much vacation time for him but I may use 1/2 a day and leave on a Thursday or early Friday. Stop only for food & gas.

Tho I do have an uncle in Kentucky near the Tennesee border that I haven't seen since he came up here a few years ago. Never been down there. Rarely make it out of the state, and last time I did was a trip to six flags in Il, then to visit friend of my wife in Iowa who is an engineer for JD where they make the big arcticulated ones. Of course, I got to take a tour.... That was more than a few years ago itself.

You may want to put an ad on the hauling schedule.
You may find a car hauler or someone heading your
way that will do it cheaper than your fuel both ways

Feb. is the month for the big 5 to 8 day auctions by Ritchie Bros, Yoder & Frey, Alex Lyon & son & several others near Orlando. Look up their websites & get their flyers. I was always able to buy trailers down there & sell them at home for what I bought 'em for, or near enough to be cheaper than renting one, if a rental one could be had. New & used, nearly new, homemade, they will sell hundreds of'em. Fun in the sun vacation & make money to boot. Hundreds of tractors will sell, from new to parts machines. Flyers will only tell you 1% of what is there. I've also bought big trucks & tralered my pickup home. Oh to be young again.

According to Map Quest it's almost 1200 miles and will take over 18 hours driving. My late BIL drove from Detroit to Tampa in 2 days with a car.
Map Quest recommends using I-90E to I-65S. Fuel cost around $600.00. Place an ad in the Hauling Schedule on this forum to see if someone needs a load going to your area. Hal

If you go with U-Haul.. VERIFY, Verify, Verify..They are notorious for overbooking... Then you go to pick up the trailer/truck, and they are OUT.. All you get is a "Sorry"

Don-Wi; if you elect U-Haul they are going to ask lots of ?'s; prof of insurance, what is your towing vehicle, what are you hauling. Don't repeat this but, the local U-haul renter said always tell them you are hauling a Chevy Nova chassis cause it will always fit the bill. They via computer, match what you have, etc. With their hitch braking system, don't get yourself in a pinch by needing to back uphill while loaded. Make sure every light, etc. is up to snuff on your vehicle as you would make some troopers day if not. Safety-wise it should be anyway. Early March of '04 I drove back from Orlando, a 1967 F-100. The last leg was from Paducah, Kentucky to Monroe plus four more hours tuckered me out. Vinyl seats, no radio, no heat as I didn't want to run decades of unknown gunk through to water pump...it got a little uncomfortable about central Illinoizzz; their roads suck big time also. Yup, check the local rental. I trailered roundtrip to Maryland (visit my sister and B-I-L) then NJ and backhauled an IH 460. Good to get back on Badger State ground. If you are under the gun for time, it ain't gonna be fun and what happens if delayed by breakdowns and or weather. Maybe he should make his own hauling arrangments? Just my 20 cents worth. Good luck.

I was messing around on the uhaul site and if I said it was a v6 it would allow me to pull it, but a v8 was a no go. Not sure what engineis even in it so I'm still fact finding.

As far as having it hauled, I'm not sure he's willing to go that route either. I think this may need to be a learning experience for him. He also mentioned a friend of his girl friends step dad is in La and tedious cars for a living, blah blah blah and is thinking about bringing it over there to have him swap the engine for him. To me that seems to be an awful lot of hassle and I'll try my hardest to convince him to just find a shop here to do the swap, or do it himself.

More or less, like I said, I think this may just be a learning experience for him. I told him right away that he would be paying the gas and trailer rental. I'll throw some figures together for gas mileage for him to ponder before committing. I know hauling hay 1/2 loaded 1/2 empty I got around 9 mpg. And I think the hay was a little heavier (I know the trailer sure was) and was for sure a whole lot less aerodynamic

In the end, if we do go together I'm not just hopping in the truck without some serious planning and possibly some gas money up front.

Sounds like a trip. Another suggestion is him getting on the internet, finding a reputable shop where the car is located, have them install an engine then he could fly/Amtrack/Greyhound down there and drive where ever he wants it to go. He's gonna pay for an engine anyway. And 9MPG both ways plus food plus a motel for a night plus trailer rental plus incidentals isn't going to be cheap.

It's at a friend's place down there right now, it just needs to be out of there by some time in March. He doesn't think much right now at all so about the best I can do is offer some help and advice. If the deal doesn't seem right I reserve the right to say no.

a couple months ago, My cousin shipped a dead MG from Portland OR to upstate NY for 7-8 hundred (if I remember correctly). I was impressed with the small cost for the miles involved. This hauler was a car hauler.
