JD 3010 has no power

I am trying to help out a friend with her tractor, she owns a JD 3010, it has never run right since she bought it. We put electronic
ignition and have replaced the carb, no luck. It will run for a bit then can't keep it running. I would like any info I could get. Thanks

Will it restart after a time? If so may be non vented gas cap, stopped fuel filter, trash in fuel lines. What have you tried other tan carb and points?

Welcome to the facts of life on a JD new generation gas tractor with todays gas. I have run into some that none of us could make run "right"

Here are some things to try. I give ZERO guarantees that anything you do will make it run right.

1) Do a wet and dry compression check. See if you have low compression because of burnt valves.

2) If the compression check is alright then adjust the valves. I have seen them too tight. Then when the motor warms up the valves will not close.

3) You say you replaced the carburetor. Which one did you have and which one do you have now.

4) Check the distributor out. Even with the electronic kits the shaft bushing can be worn out and then the timing is effected.

5) Check the ignition timing. Start form scratch.

6) Adjust the governor linkage. If it is out of adjustment then it will effect everything else.

You may not get it to run right. They are real temperamental on the new formulas of gas. Running premium may help. I think it is the new blends that are the issue. The burn rate is different than the older fuels had. Had one old fellow that swore that he blended some diesel with his gas to make the burn rate slower and it helped his tractor out. I tried it and just fouled the plugs faster than they already where.

I had a gas JD 4010 on my feeder wagon for 10-15 years. When the new oxygenated fuels came out I just could not keep it running correctly. I even completely overhauled it. With good compression, several different carburetors, and electronic ignition. It still would not run right or keep from fouling plugs.

I finally solved the problem. I sold the tractor and switched to diesel.

Everything JD said below most likely true. When I had the SC Case spark was everything, you need a good hot spark. Run hot plugs in it and gap them on the wide side. You might have to go back to the original mechanical points and coil. Put 89 octane in it with a strong shot of Marvel Mystery oil. This will make the burn time better and lubricate the valves. Cousin does these same things for 1967 IH 656 gasser. These tips based on good compression, a lot of old tractors were just "parked" when they were worn out. How long has your friend owned this tractor?

I remember when the 3010 came out that they were so bad on power the dealers had to take them all back in and rebuild the engines, first ones I ever saw were torn down in dealers shops and they were within a couple of months old.

Thank all of you for your replies, I have done the filters, fuel cap, air cleaner etc. The one thing I didn't think of was today's fuel, I think we should go back to points and higher octane, what do you all think? She bought the tractor 10 years ago, it had been sitting a few years, there is not alot of hours on this tractor and its JD how could she go wrong?
