Starter Button / In Neutral.... wont push

I have just spent a couple of months turning an ugly 47 Ford 8n into what looks like an almost new tractor now. I did this because I lost my job and I am going to have to sell this to hopefully keep me going till I can find work....... yeah, well... went out all proud with my boys today. Rolled it out of the barn, put gas in it and jumped it. Yeah, it will start EVEN THOUGH you cannot push the starter button in! The starter keeps spinning so obviously, I have a wire wrong. The REAL problem though is that it is in neutral and you can roll it around all over but it wont seem to go into gear. I did A LOT of work to this tractor but I NEVER TOUCHED anything to do with the transmission. How in the $%@$#% can a piece of steel sit idle and break itself. I am on the verge of taking a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge if you know what I mean..... What can you tell me?

by "won't seem to go in gear" I am assuming you mean you put it gear and let out the clutch but it will not move? If you have an aux transmission, like the Sherman, make sure the lever is either all the way forward or all the way back - if it is in the middle (nuetral) you will get the symptons described.

The clutch can stick to the flywheel or Pressure plate with rust or GOO. Either way it will not let the operator shift into gear (grinding). The starter system should be set up with a Relay (solenoid) one big terminal (farthest from little terminal) connects to the starter motor
The other big terminal (closest to the little terminal) is connected to the battery. The little terminal connects to the starter button. The button is grounded. (grounding the relay little terminal spins the starter.)
Getting the clutch unstuck is usually done by Putting it is second or third and holding the pedal down while cranking and starting the engine (extreme care to head in a clear direction and with the idea that it will not be easy to stop) when moving this way, (pedal down) the forces on the clutch will usually free it and all is well. DO NOT do this if you are at all an inexperienced tractor operator. Again ask on the Ford Forum for other clutch freeing info. Jim

Well the starter button is a transmission lock out so if the button is sticking in the down position which will make the starter keep spinning but that also locks the transmission out of any gears. In neutral yes the tractor can be rolled around with little trouble because it is out of gear as in neutral. These transmissions are not your your cars automatic transmissions and they do not have a park

I really hope its just a stuck button. I didnt think it was...... I will have to get deeper into it tomorrow. I sure do thank all of you guys who are so generous with your knowledge. I will check back tomorrow. THANKS!

My 841 has that same type of starter button but it has been by pasts many years ago but if I push it down it will not pop back up and if that happens I can not shift it into any gear
