Lookiing at plows for a farmall M

I started today looking for a plow system for a Farmall M. I had found some three plows systems on yesterday tractors listed but I am not to sure if the Farmall M can handle a three 14" plow system. Right now I own a two way, two 14" plow system for the farmall M they call it a I.H.C model 39 roll over plow. It is all brocken up and need lots of repairs and yes I am asking is it worth repairing it or buying another set. What can you tell me please tell me what yopu think thanks Brent.

We use a 3 bottom with our M. I believe it's a "Little Genius"

Brent, they were sold here as a 3-14 bottom tractor. Unless you have really heavy clay soil a 3 bottom should work well on it.

The best plow for that tractor is what you have; the tumble plow.

IH was always way too "optimistic" on their power ratings when it came to plows.

A three bottom will bend the ears back on a 656 diesel.

Depends on your soil. I've pulled a 2x14 L-genius with my H in heavy clay w/ corn stubble and turned in thick old hay feild. I used an IH manual I got on ebay to setup the 2x14. My 50H dynos at 24hp. I have my Grandpas M and 2x16 L-genius. I'am sure the M will pull 3x14's in everything I've plowed. With good tires, proper balast and setting the plow up correctly you should be good w/3x14 just about everywhere. However, there are reports on this site of extremely heavy soils that require a smaller plow. Good Luck..

We plowed with our M pulling Oliver 2-16's and in hilly ground second gear and on level ground third gear that is in a sandy loam.

Brent,in irrigated country, that tumble plow is perfect. If you are in one way country,a 2 or three bottom is equally acceptable.Where are you?I pull a tumble plow with my Super M in irrigated western Colorado. In eastern Kansas,Dad pulled 3x14 with an M.Does your M have a 3point?You can use a mounted plow,I can tell you how to set it up to plow right.I have also pulled 3x14 2way with my sm on the 3point.A 2bottom 2way would be best if you want to stay with a 2 way.Steve

100% agree! An M would never pull 3-14s on its BEST day around here. I have never seen an M with a three bottom plow behind it here in NE WI.

Here in the loam gently rolling hills of central Clark co Wisconsin, All of the plows sold for the Farmall M were 3 bottom. I still have the 3-14 little genius that dad bought new with his new M in '52. Now, if your soil is heavier or if your M has a lot of engine wear, that will change the situation. Look at what your neighbors use.

we used 3 x 14 not speedy but worked better then 2 x 14 for tire settings . i had 2 x 16 on d 15 go anywhere then 3 +14 on 1650 till i got plow pan broke then 4 x 14 at 9 miles an hour clay sod thats fun till i hit that rock 2 shares gone

I would suggest an International ace bottom 3x 12. Dad had one when he bought his 88 Oliver new, and it worked well behind it.( As I remember the only reason not to run 4th gear was for fear of catching a rock and breaking something at that speed) I was always bugging dad to buy a bigger plow, but his theory was "better to take a little more time to get the plowing done v/s overloading the tractor" Mind you I am pretty sure they used the same plow behind my Grandfathers Oliver 70. I imagine it would have been been quite a load for the 70!

West central Ohio area and all M's pulled 3 bottoms, some 12" alot of 14" with a few 16", mostly depends on the bottom size you like. Had one person say he could pull the 3-16" easier than 3-12", I think it probably was quality and setup of the plow. I would want 3-=12" muself, same as I pulled with the late John Deere A tractors as they are rated within 1 horspower of each other, the same as the Farmall H and late John Deere B tractors that we pulled 2-12" with.

I have a very tired 41M. It will pull 3-14"s in 1st and 2nd in clay sod and 2nd or 3rd in corn stubble. I don"t plow crazy deep (6" or 7"). Our top soil is not all that thick here on the hill tops. 400 and 450 will pull a gear higher with 3-14"s and they are geared higher to boot. Like I said, the M is really tired. I would think that unless your tractor is in bad shape it should pull 3-14"s fine unless you have something that plows harder than brown clay in SE Ohio.

I have done quite a few plow days. Some times 30 plus tractors plowing. Some farms with heavy corn stalk reside would cause plugging problems with the 3/14 plows.....the 2/16 plows with more clearance had less or no problems. With today's high population corn planting I want all the clearance I can get. The age of plows that match up to the M didn't have the trash room like the later new plows.

I live and grew up in NE IA and we pulled 3-16's with the M with no problems. In fact we pulled the same plow with a 350, but the M would pull it a little better.

then the elders all cussed the newer generation IH tractors, gotta rebuild #### engines every two or three seasons. Rings and exhaust valves, they always would just grind the intake valves to save money :)

Don't get to carried away, there seems to be a lot of fond memories on here that might be a little cloudy. A m around here will not pull 3-16's on its best day. The last thing you want is to pull the plow so slow it only lays the ground over and you can see every plow furrow like a wavy potato chip. Makes fitting pretty tough. Go with a smaller plow that really turns the dirt, plows at a good depth instead of scratching the surface because you don't have enough power to plow it right and makes a smoother surface that you can hit a couple quick passes with a disc and you've got a good seed bed.

All M's in my area including my Dads pulled 3x14's in 3rd gear..I was on a B JD behind Dad pulling 2x14's and later an A JD pulling 2x16's......He lapped me all the time..

All 560's and 656's pulled 4x16's in my area as our ground pulled fairly easy..

A neighbor got a new 706D and pulled 5x16's in low 3rd with the TA forward...I ran it some and it did better than I first thought it would.
