Free fire wood

Had a truck load of junk fire wood. Stuff won't burn. It's been drying for 3 years and will hardly burn. Put the wood at the end of the driveway 3 weeks ago with a sign, free wood take as much as you want. No takers. Put a for sale sign on it yesterday morning, pile was gone this morning. In it's place was 11 empty beer cans. I will sell the cans, so I got more than I wanted for the wood.

that's funny! Must have been willow or basswood if you couldn't get any heat out of it. Must have been kids that took the wood. People our age count those nickles.

At one of the dealerships I worked at there was this old rear engine rider. It had a lot of issues. At that time even scrap was not very high. So we put it out on the front loading dock with a "Free" sign on it. No one took it.

Advertised it for $20 and had the phone ring off the wall with guys wanting it. Two almost got into a fight as they got there at the same time to "buy" it. LOL

People are strange. "Free" puppies and cat are hard to get rid of but $20 dollar ones sell fast.

Guy on a fairly busy TX. farm to market road (lower grade than state highways which are lower grade than US routes) has a Murray riding lawnmower with pretty good looking paint and no visible problems sitting next to the road. No sign, no nothing. It has been sitting in the same spot for several weeks and no body has touched it. Trying to figure out his game plan.

best one around here was people had 3 horses they wanted rid of so they put up a corral at the end of there drive with a sign saying "free horses",..couple days later they went out to feed them and they had 4......

That is the same trick grocery stores use.Have an item you can't get rid of at 15 cents. Post it at four for a dollar. It will fly out of the store.

Store keeper told me that 40 years ago .He bought a lot of gas line antifreeze cheap.Priced it at 19 cents a can.Very slow sales.Sales man told him to put a 3 for a dollar sign on it.Sold out fast.Theres an old book called Yankee Store Keeper by R E Gould.well worth reading if you can find a copy.

All wood has the same BTU content per pound.I heated my shop with poplar one winter with no problem. We all have favorite fire wood but any dry wood under cover is worth more than money in the bank.

I like the posts one Craig"s list for "Free Wood " . Most of the time it"s a standing tree next to house or power lines. They got bids to remove it but are to cheap . they offer it for free in hope someone will save them $600. Firewood has little value until it"s downed , cut split and stacked . Oh yea,,they want you to have insurance in case it drops on house. lol Imagine the nerve of greedy tree companies charging so much !

sometimes free will come back to bite you, a old boss i had in the parts store had a old chevy luv delivery truck, worn out, a zillion miles, rusty and ugly, put a sign on it for sale, nobody wanted it, lowered the price to 100 bucks, nobody wanted it, took the thing to elpaso tx, put it in a mall parking lot, 10 minutes from the mexican border, rolled the windows down and left the keys in the ignition, the life expentancy of certain vehicles in this parking lot is 3 minutes, end of story? nope, the next day he gets a call from the elpaso police dept. seems they impounded this ugly green chevy luv truck redigistared to him, abandond in the parking lot of a mall... now he has to go get it, pay the 450 impound and tow fees and bring it back home, lol he finaly sold it as scrap

My second wife was notorious in that regard. She'd need an item that NORMALLY sold for only 40 cents each, but she'd see a sign saying SALE - Two for a Dollar and she'd go and buy $20. worth. When questioned why she bought so many when she only needed 1 , she would reply "But they were on sale" . . . DUH! She never bothered to do the math. GRrrrr!
