Invisible fence

Has any body ever used one of the invisible fences for dogs if so how did they work? We have a gate that leads out to the highway and really do not want to shut and open the gate every time we go out of it. I tried one of the auto gates but the wind kept breaking it. Thanks

I tried it and thought it was great until my lab saw a bird he particularly liked. then of he went across the fence yelping all the time from the shock , but focused on the bird .I just turned it of .

We Have What is called a radio fence it uses a remote controller that you adjust a circle around your house we set ours to where the dog only goes within 50' of the road no wires to break and can adjust the area larger and small enough to kee him on the porch. I think we picked it up at Lowes or Home depot
Hope this helps

Family member had it and as dblair said if the dog gets focused on something they will run through the field of wireless fence and they can't return to the yard until fence is turned off ( think there is a switch on colar).

I've had one around a 3 acre yard for 15+ years. Train the dog early, I have the stubborn dog collar for radio fence brand. 3 dogs so far. collar gives a shock like electric fence after vibrating first, if dog is taking shock you need a new collar or you need to set the setting higher.
last dog was black lab, yellow lab mix 120 lb dog, saw him take down/ kill 2 deer in the yard in the 8 years I had him (along with 50+ racoon/ possum/ woodchucks (and 2 cats)) he knew where the line was and would go full bore till 10' from the line where it would start vibrating and stop. last 3 years of his life the dog line was disconnected but he knew where the line was...

I sold and serviced them for 12 years. If you are going to hook it up and cut the dog loose don't waste your time! On the other hand if you are willing to properly train the dog and maintain the system it will likely work for you. I had 1250 customers when I sold the business and only had a hand full that could not be contained. (mostly Husky or Husky crosses)There are some dogs that have higher thresholds of pain but there are also products to work with that. If you have a large breed of dog just go right to the Stubborn dog collar (Pet Safe/Radio Systems) with the 9 volt battery. On the high setting you check this one with a screwdriver (good 1/2 inch blue spark!)There is also different settings for the dogs that like to figure things out! That being said, Training,Training, Training!!!! you actualy condition the dog to not want to cross the line. I serviced many customers who said "my dog will go right through it if he sees something he wants" I always offered a money back guarantee if they were willing to train! Almost always worked! (Huskies are TOUGH dogs and I have the stories to prove it!) hope this helps with your decision.
Good Luck,
Andy

We want something that fits a horses neck. We have 1 horse that chases another thru electic fence so she can get to that area without having to hit the fence herself. Sender on the chased animal, receiver on her, get too close and zap!!!

I've got several neighbors that have them and for their dogs they seem to work great. For my Lab though, my experience was not so good. Basically I had the same problems others have described in that he would focus on something on the other side of the fence (a neighbor dog that would antagonize him) and run through it.

That said the only place mine could get up enough speed to run through it without getting zapped was at the end of the driveway. Every where else there were trees, etc in the way so he would have to try to cross slow and got zapped before he could get all the way across. A friend of mine had a similar problem with his dog. What he did was to go back and rerun the fence with a couple of passes across the area his dog was running through. He said the first time the dog tried running through it after the change, it got him good. Basically the first wire set it off, the second kept it going and it zapped him. He tried running away from it and either way he went he only put himself closer to another wire that kept getting him zapped. Buddy said after that incident he never even saw the dog get a warning as he never even got close to the fence again.

On top of that, I know the Pet Safe brand fences, which is what I've got, have a collar you can buy individually for stubborn dogs. It uses a 9V battery and is designed to give a zap over and above the standard collar to really get their attention if the regular one doesn't work. I got one for mine but the fence got cut and I haven't had time to get it fixed and try it yet.

Years ago when these came out I saw a video of a real smart dog who figured out if he ran up the side of the house to low roof he could jump over the fence. Most dogs it works great on but some are smarter than the fence and you are.

Ya,we've got it. Better than the buried wire. The wireless keeps right on stinging them if they over run it,unlike the buried wire.

I have had our dog on one for several years now.
Works very well for her. She does like to creep up on it and wear down the batteries though.
I have a hard time getting good collar units.I liked the lightweight more adjustable ones, but They don't last long. I went back to the old heavy stubborn dog unit I bought used.

I was thinking of getting the wireless kind, but I'm pretty sure after reading how they work that if our power was to go out it would start shocking the dog. We have alot of power outages.

We'd been buying those batteries at Menards and they were God awful expensive. No better at Radio Shack but we found them right on the rack near the checkout counter at Family Farm and Home for something like seven dollars.

Do they work, yes! Work good until your dog gets a good run at it! Our beagle did very, very good with it until on day, he saw a rabbit, and he ran right through it with out even the slightest shock! Turned up the gain on it and he did better, but we have to take it off when he comes in the house since the wire is close enough to on side of the house it will set it his collar off. The training is the key, you can just put the wire in, put his collar on and let him go. (Only use thier batteries, others simply will not work, Ive wasted enough money trying to find one that would!)

What batteries do your use ? I've had several different units and so far they all take batteries I can get at drug mart and wal mart.
2032 and A544 these were just 2 for $5.00 the other day.

We have had one for over 15 years and we have labs and a german shorthair. I had to change the transmiter once because the chocolate lab would get in the warning field and lay down until the battery went dead on his collar then go thru it. I got one that I could shut the warning field off and that fixed him for a while. His next trick was to lay in the shock zone and get shocked until the battery went dead. I cranked it wide open and that took care of that. I had one here where we are now that got hit with lightening and it blew the transmiter all over the pole barn and melted the wire in the woods. I would buy another in a heart beat. If you lay the wire on top of the ground in the woods the deer will step on it and cut it. They will not cross it unless there is snow on the ground here

Lot of dealers will not touch Huskys. We have had Huskys on a "Dog Watch"system for twenty yrs.and have never had them cross the wire but 3-4 times and it was some my fault(low batt or broken wire).Training is the big part.Once they learn where it is at,you can go awhile with it even turned off and they will respect it.We have around 3000 to 3500 ft. of wire buried.Go with a dealer that will help train, not with TSC or some off shelf store.

We had great luck with our two Jack Russels for 11 yrs. I left the wire in the ground but the driver unplugged after the dogs were gone. Lightning struck a tree about 2 ft from the burried wire here is the damage.
It took out the well all Tv's, microwave, computer, the list goes on. That said what is the chance of that happening. we were lucky we didn't lose the house. The outlet was in the dinning room with a lamp plugged in but not on.

Brother had one

Darn dog figured out that if he ran really fast over where the burred line was he didn't get shocked. Or if he did he was already out.

Dang dog smarter then we are

My fence is the actual "Invisible Fence Co." fence. Their batteries are different enough that aftermarket wont work in the collar. Google Invisible Fence PowerCap. Thats what ours uses.

Flembo:

That's why you use LIGHTNING ARRESTERS on everything. A number of years ago a lightning bolt hit one of my Ham Radio antennas; blew out the Capacitor on the antenna (easily replaced) and 5 Lightning Arresters. Saved all of my equipment including the Ham Radio which was ON and IN USE at the time.

I have the ultra smart system from Innotek and I have 2 acres buried and it works GREAT! If the dog gets close (you set the distance) he'll get a warning and the closer he gets the higher the correction. It will stop my 100lb dog in his tracks and send him back yelping. Easy to install and I rented a cable installer to put wire in. (looks like a bed edger) Not hard at all. I just added a second dog to mine and all I did was buy a additional collar. I think I paid about $260.00 for my system. It also has rechargeable collar and a battery back up if power fails.

In the next to the last picture you can just make out part of the lightning protector on the blown up well control box. there is another on the main cabinet.

I use the pet safe wireless system . I have used it on several pit bulls.

It will not shock them if the power is off. No way to sense the transmitter.

If this system will not contain them then you need a different dog, cause it's too stupid to learn.

We had a problem like that with our golden retriever. He seen rabbits and ran right across it. So we got a second collar and out it around his waist just above his pecker, he went to cross that line and dropped like a fly. Never went near it again lol.

Our neighbors had that for their chocolate lab. If she wanted out for something bad enough she would close her eyes and walk through it, yipping all the way. One morning I saw she was in our yard so I yelled across to the neighbor. She came over and said the batteries must be dead and took the collar off so the dog would go home. Had the collar in her hand as she walked back. Turns out the batteries were not dead. Learned new words that day.
